The cast

Martha Johnson
Role: Playwright
Martha Johnson is a director, teacher, and actor who is one of the
founders of Mu Performing Arts and is currently a core artistic group
member. Since its founding in 1992, she has been involved in the
development of new performance pieces and plays, including Mask Dance, Triangles, Grace, River of Dreams, and The Hand That Holds the String. She also recently co-wrote and performed in Floating Mothers at the Playwrights' Center. In the 1980's she was a founder, co-artistic
director and actor for the 21st Street Players that produced such works as A Journey to the Well by Robert Bly and Hoichi by Japanese Noh actor Akira Matsui at Walker Art Center. She also taught acting in the Guthrie Theater's Outreach Program for several years. She is a theater professor at Augsburg College, where she’s taught and directed plays for twenty years. She'd like to express her deep gratitude for the support of Rick Shiomi, Jen Weir, and Mu, who have provided such generous creative guidance and artistic support in the development of Dipped in Love.

Maria Kelly
Role:
Maria Kelly made her acting debut with Mu Performing Arts in "Happy Valley" in 2005, and was thrilled to bring the show to New York City as part of the first National Asian American Theater Festival last summer. She directed the collaborative production of "Journey of the Drum" with Mu and SteppingStone Theatre and will direct "Tiger Tales" next season. Maria has worked as a director/choreographer on several SteppingStone Theatre productions and has staged productions for Phipps Center for the Arts, Burnsville Community Theater, and Taipei American School. She is very grateful for all of the opportunities that Mu has provided for her these past few years.

Jennifer Rives
Role:
Equity Actor
Jen is an actor new to the Minneapolis area and is very happy to be working with Theatre Mu in this Fringe production. She has enjoyed many roles on many stages, from Honey in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf in Iowa, Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream in Tennessee, Emily Bronte in The Bronte Cycle in California, to Arkadina in The Sea Gull in Budapest, Hungary. And Law & Order in New York, if you count the TV as a teeny stage in your living room.

Momoko Tanno
Role:
Equity Actor
Momoko Tanno is delighted to be part of "Dipped in Love." She has just returned from Berkeley Repertory Theatre where she appeared as Susanna in "Figaro" with Theatre de la Jeune Lune where she has also appeared as Donna Anna in "Don Juan Giovanni" and Frasquita in "Carmen," reprising all three roles at American Repertory Theatre. Momoko has also worked with Theater Mu as Omani/Teacher in "The Walleye Kid" in the Ordway McKnight Theatre, and Tamate/Shogun’s Mother in "Pacific Overtures" as a co-production with Park Square Theatre, as well as roles at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, Dorian Opera Theatre, Mixed Blood Theater, Nautilus Music-Theater, and others. As a soprano soloist, Momoko’s recent concert engagements include Bach's Christmas Oratorio in Germany with the Heinrich Schütz-Chor, Heilbronn and Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Bach’s St. John’s Passion with the Heinrich Schütz-Chor, Tokyo; and Bach’s B-minor Mass with the Bach Society of Minnesota. Momoko enjoys teaching voice at MacPhail Center for Music and her private studio.

Jennifer Weir
Role: Director
Jennifer Weir is an artistic core member of Mu Performing Arts and is active in both the theater and taiko. She has directed Happy Valley by Aurorae Khoo at the AATF in NYC, Bahala Na by Clarence Coo, and will be directing the premiere of Ching Chong Chinaman by Lauren Yee at Mixed Blood in Feb 09. She is a senior performing and composing member of Mu Daiko and a MSAB, Jerome and American Composers Forum grant recipient. She is especially grateful to Mu for continuing to produce new work. Over the life if this project, Dipped has allowed her to work with some of the most amazing and talented women in the Twin Cities.

I really enjoyed this show. The struggles, enjoyments, and relationships of the women reflect and explain the importance of courage, faith, and friendship. Great story of empowerment. Love, love, love.

This was a really polished and well-acted show that was thoughtfully directed in a restrained but engaging manner. Any play that interweaves disparate lives for thematic or didactic purposes is going to feel manipulative, but, hey, this is art! I don't mind being manipulated by theatre; in fact, bring it on! It was moving and beautifully done. Recommended.

When people talk about artsy things, this certainly was and I'm very glad for the fresh experience. I saw it at 10PM and that added to that artsy effect.

tender touching stories of three women who form a unique bond of friendship despite cultural differences. I was surprised that there was a non indian woman playing an east indian woman, but she pulled off the accent and movements beautifully! loved it! vjk

After a tough day at the Fringe, I was revived by this trio of women inter-weaving their stories of life, love, loss, separation, independence, renewal, performed on a strikingly simple set of colorful banners. Definitely made me want to see more works by Mu, by the author and by the actresses.

Really and truly this was the best theater presentation that I have ever seen at the Fringe. It was serious and funny at the same time. If you have any interest about cultural dilemmas in relationship to creating a brilliant life, see this. I lived in Japan and traveled to India and London, and this show still impressed me.

This was a great way for me to start off my 2008 Fringe experience. "Dipped in Love" is an exquisitely rendered story of three women from different cultures who discover their common bonds through friendship and strife. Beautifully written, performed and choreographed. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll enjoy!
