3 Kitties for Story + 1 Kitty for Looks

Malia ponders humanity's relationship with nature, talks about hosting her own wildlife show, asks the questions we all ask about how we're killing our planet and what we should be doing to conserve and survive, and goes on this kind of interesting exploration of soil vs dirt. All this is presented with spoken word, some kind of free-form movement that I wouldn't quite call dance, some recliner acrobatics, video, this really cool thing where she makes her own cocoon, and a bucket of dirt.

I didn't find the story she told to be gripping, exactly, but I really liked the way she presented it. I'm sure every Fringe artist puts a lot of thought into their show, but it was interesting watching the show keeping in mind that every little bit was very carefully considered (having skimmed through her blog dedicated to the development of this show).

If you're looking to try something "different" this is a good option.

"Can you feel it?"

I was treated to a lovely show by the appealing presence of Malia Burkhart in her Survival Pages. I think that her show description doesn’t do justice to the light handed but very evocative handling of her material. The material slides into our shared earthly natures and desires, and I personally could feel in my muscles the pounce, stretch, and opening that Malia dances in real time and on video. It is a visceral piece. It is also serenely funny as Malia lives her dream of hosting a nature series. I would definitely tune in to her take on the Living Planet. There is one show left, and I recommend that you make sure to see “The Survival Pages”.

Malia's Wild America

Loved the sinuey Butoh moves intercut with Malia's gentle humor and striking video. The parallel between the emerging butterfly and the newspaper winged dance was powerful. Loved the Wild America riffs and the sensual dance with the dirt. And how did she manage to balance so well on a Naugahide Lazyboy? My only disappointment was from this multitalented HOTB artist, I was expecting a least SOME puppetry. However, I do recommend that you catch this creatively inspired piece.

A deeply personal, loving and gentle expression of one woman's committed, lifetime relationship to nature and to the earth. Great art makes you breathe differently and I took more full, deep breaths during and after this show than I have in weeks. The best work yet from this very talented performance artist. Thank you Malia!!!

Graceful Reminder

Ms. Burkhart's show reminds us all to be responsible stewards of Earth's resources. The imagery on the screen combined with her graceful dance and beautiful piano music keep the viewer engaged as she gently reminds us that we, as humans, need to pay attention. She doesn't preach, she raises awareness in a subtle way. A well put together show that makes you think.

Right Out of the Easy Chair

Malia Burkhart's “The Survival Pages” is a poetic piece which, among other things, incorporates beautiful and intriguing video imagery with live movement. An especially poignant moment, bordering on the mystical, is when Malia in the present (live on stage) dances with the Malia captured in the past (on video.) There were numerous moments in the show like that, where my conscious mind was pulled out of its easy chair.

The weight of the potential doom that lurks in our future is carried by Malia in a playful, hopeful way. She stares unblinkingly at our troubled times. She might flinch as the mighty fist swings at her, but she then turns that defensive-reflex-reaction into a celebration of the goodness that exists now and she rides it into a spirited belief that something is awakening and emerging within us that will carry us through. If you need your battery recharged to help keep up the good fight, go see this show.

I saw this one while waiting to see another show, and I was utterly astounded! Malia has exquisite balance and timing. She knows her props and her space intimately. This show seems to genuinely come from the heart of a performer who tries to keep her art relevant to everyday life on both the micro and macro levels. The show is a melange of storytelling, modern dance, video, recorded sounds, and ecopolitical ruminations. This was a delight to experience!

The varied elements (dance, video, newspaper, recliner ...) were each beautifully and cleanly presented and woven together into a very satisfying whole. Quietly poetic and thought provoking. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this show. Malia put together a beautifully crafted piece that asks important questions about our world and our environment but delivers her thoughts in a poignant and powerful, yet gentle way. I loved her incorporation of multi-media, including a beautiful bit with newspapers. I highly recommend this show.

Wild Card

We enjoyed the clever mixing of media, dense metaphor and social exploration which deftly avoided the cliche. The use of dance and space was clever and Malia was ery charming. Definitely worthwhile.
