small aïda

presented by Penelope Freeh

small aïda

A dancing two-person re-telling of opera's famous story. From Verdi to Johnny Cash, high-octane movement is born from a low rumble. Tumble into sound, fury, graceful disquiet and limbic pomp.

Two of my favorite dancers, together! The Johnny Cash was genius. Bravo Penny!

Opera's famous story? Since I have never been to an opera then I was missing what that was. A bit more explanation in the program would have been nice. Many of us were in line for the Underpants Show at the Ritz following Aida and we all did not know what it meant.

It was an enjoyable performance.

Two wonderful dancers. A beautiful work. Layers of ideas to play with in your head. You really should see this, and anything else Penny ever does.

An inspired distillation-reinterpretation of Aida through dance, music, staging and design. Very beautiful and classy.

I rate all performances I attend by a "was I entertained" criteria and this one failed to do that.
I approached this show with high hopes because of the pre-show hype, the venue and the dancers.
As I sat there trying to figure out what was going on while watching standard dance moves, I remembered I don't like to sit there trying to figure out what is going on.
During the performance, I was reminiscing about the fringe show, "Buckets and Tap Shoes", at the same location and wanted that experience. That was entertainment.
All I can say is, if the performance doesn't speak to me, and I have to strain to interpret the message, I'm working too hard. And that is what I try to get away from.

Did not live up to her 2007 Fringe performance. No matter how symbolic I don't find walking across a stage, to music, and placing a small figurine on the floor dance. The performance was flat and almost boring. I have loved Penelopes works in the past but was not impressed with this one.

I enjoyed this show, although I think that Penelope Freeh could have gone even simpler than she did. The props seemed to distract rather than enhance the ideas in the show, and I think if she'd have gone to the real essence it would have been fantastic. All in all, however, it's wonderful to see a couple of fantastic dancers on the stage. Recommended for dance fans.

This show is AMAZING. I am not really into dance OR opera, but I would see this twice. There was a complete tale of love, the rise and fall of empires, and at the end, there had only been these 2 amazing women on stage the whole time. Breathtaking and unbelievable.

Riveting, riveting, riveting!

A show of such large reach and skill. Such beauty and passion. To see two people transported from the audience to live and breathe the great opera, then waft back to their seats at the close of the curtain is to see the power of great art. It was like watching how I felt about the show portrayed by the show. I could have watched this for hours!

Penelope and Stephanie open and close with an intimate cup of coffee. A very sophisticated, well performed, beautiful dance and theater experience by two lovely dancers, women, and friends. Penelope has put her experience, heart and passion fully into this piece. See this show and support these two amazing dancers!

After seeing this lyrical, graceful, beautiful show on Thursday, I wonder if I will see anything better over the next ten days? Probably not.

Two-Person Triangle

This is fabulously danced by two matchless women who have graced Twin Cities stages for over a decade. Penelope Freeh of James Sewell Ballet and Stephanie Fellner of Ballet of the Dolls are a duo made in heaven. The piece springboards off the grand opera, Aïda, but does so in some truly unexpected ways. Paradoxically, you don’t need to know the story of the opera to appreciate this dance-theater piece, but on the other hand it helps in some ways and confuses in other ways if you do know the story. Definitely read the succinct program notes before the lights go out. See also my blog at tcdailyplanet.com. John Munger
