Audish

presented by The Bakery Theatre Company

Audish

"Want to see the wonkiest, craziest, silliest, most ridiculous show at the 2008 MN Fringe?...Playwrights Dylan Frederick and Anders Nerheim serve up a giant helping of absurdism...Audish proves that there is, indeed, a next generation of creative theatre minds...and they hate auditions."
-fringefamous (www.fringefamous.com)

"This show is something more than a straight comedy; it is theater of the absurd. It has slapstick, and it is bawdy, and it is dark...these performers are incredibly savvy about comedy. They've studied it."
-Geoff Herbach (Theatre Arts journalist from MN Artists)

Aww-dish is the strange story of five girls who attend what seems to be an ordinary audition for an ordinary play.

Wrong, oh so very wrong.

From arrival these girls experience the most absurd audition ever seen by mankind. Anything can happen in this whimsical new piece filled with humor, mystery and a lot of Smartwater!

Whether you've been to an audition or not, you don't want to miss this wildly imaginative new work!

Even though Dylan told us after the 1pm yesterday not to write a review cause there were no more performances, I decided I would put my two cents in since Audish has been selected for an Encore performance. Well done Audish! Go see the show if you haven't. Dylan has taken his abbreviating skills to a new level!

What a great show. The "Director" has awesome energy. Tight shorts. :) Cute.

Everything at the end disintegrated. And it was perfect. It was the only thing that could have happened. It must have happened. It needed to happen and it did. The plot disintegrated. The characters disintegrated. The scene and setting disintegrated. The whole show just disintegrated. Perfect.

Brutally Hilarious!

I heard "Audish" presented by the Bakery Theatre Company was highly rated, so I raced over to catch their last performance of it on Saturday at 1PM.

A group of chairs in a curved line on the stage begins filling up with young girls carrying all forms of "audish" gear, the title finally making sense. A Nazi Stage Manager in shorts and black socks/shoes (Dylan Frederick, co-writer of the play) is perfectly nasty and keeps the girls in military order. The energy drink sipping (gulping, guzzling) over-the-top director (Anders Nerheim, co-writer of play) gets exceedingly more and more crazy the more Red Bull he consumes, everything that comes out of his mouth is so funny you don’t even care HOW CRUEL he is to the young girls that come in to sing, read lines and for poor Princess Bunny (Kiana Adams) is forced to hop for the director just because she has that name. You get the idea that this play is putting directors and stage managers on a spit and turning them over the hot fire of jokes and audience laughter.

Each one of the girls who auditions seems to occupy a stereotypical role…the princess who lies on her resume, the actress who is “above it all” and has twenty 48 ounce bottles of water on her bag (used to drench the stage in chaos later in the play), the nerd dressed in red who gets laughs with her nasal-voice and often-picked on innocence, the quite girl who comes out and practically chokes the nerd (seems to come out of nowhere) who gives the director her resume in a crumpled wet ball, and the normal girl who is in for her first audition and simply is a young girl and part of the bunch, breathing some fresh air and sanity into the war of stereotypes.

But what could happen with a play like this is that it can get nasty, hurtful and burrow into a mood that would then kick the audience out of their merriment, but it never does. The director keeps making up new jokes and picking on each girl that walks through his door to audition, and goes off on his own acting rants (as directors are want to do showing off their own experience) as well as singing with some of the girls, but mostly brutalizing all of them, including his stage manager, who mistakenly thinks HE got the part and touches off a chaos and mayhem of girls attacking director so funny and beautifully orchestrated, I just opened my mouth in awe.

The acting is first rate, the girls can sing and dance and are so well directed by Anders and Dylan that I can’t wait to see what’s next for these two. I have seen now eleven shows at the Fringe and this is the only one that deserves fives kitties. Well done all of you!

A decent effort for a young cast.

The script here was as much at fault as anything. What started out as a fun romp, by the end degenerated into puzzling character unreality.

When one goes and sees a play and hears that it was written by two high schoolers you might expect to see a mediocre show with no popcorn, but not with Audish. In this tale, beautifully crafted by Anders Nerheim and Dylan Frederick, the audience is shown the possible outcome of an audition gone horrible awry. From it's hilarious one liners to the outstanding acting to the absurd plot that unfold before us. This show has it all. Congrats to the cast and the directors, and I hope I am able to see more of their great work in the future

Unbelievable creation and talent from such young and gifted artists.
Dylan and Anders are truly exceptional in their field. I saw the show on Sunday night and haven't stopped sharing my thoughts and recommending others to take the time and experience this show. My hat's off to the writers and actors. Very gifted. I look forward to seeing more from all of them...More that 5 kitties!!!!!!!

I caught the 10pm showing of AUDISH and was really entertained. There is definitely nothing deep or thought-provoking about this show but it's a hysterical peek into the "real" world of auditions. Having experienced audishes in the Twin Cities for most of my life, I could pin-point each of the stereotypes, quirks and in-jokes used in this show. The writing was clever and catchy, from the banter of the auditioners to the ranting of the director to the inane Mundane Dialogue used in the "auditions." The cast was sort of hit-or-miss. The two most comfortable with the material were, unsurprisingly, Dylan and Anders. Anders was a brilliant mix of Will Ferrell meets Superbad meets A Chorus Line. And every time Dylan got up from behind his desk, I couldn't help but laugh at his skinny white legs poking out from his short-shorts. As for the rest of the cast, the girl who stood out to me as really getting the character and the point of the show was Amy Stockhaus as Tara. Her timing was perfect, her characterization impeccable. A close second was Madee Weisner as Paz, whose drawling speech and easy non-chalance made her a funny character to watch. The rest of the girls were sufficient, if not a little predictable. It seemed like they were trying too hard to match the inherent exuberance of Stockhaus, who really left the rest of them in the dust. Rebecca Hurd as Jessica was the most confusing; her continuous screaming during the second half the show was perplexing, seeing as there was little to have provoked her ranting. I was also disappointed at the underdevelopment of some of the smaller roles -- especially Fert and Seify, as well as the two stage moms. They sort of just popped in and out without moving plot along or having any real purpose. All in all, however, I really enjoyed AUDISH. Did I walk out of the theater feeling like I had been moved or compelled to deep discussion? No. But I got a few good laughs and got to see some of my friends having fun doing an original show.

Praises of Audish..
This is a brilliantly crafted witty show that kept me engaged from beginning to end. i think its a wonderfully entertaining piece for the avid auditioner and the theater novice just "there for the show" Anders Neirheim was absolutely hysterical..and all of the girls in the show were not only talented vocalists but admirable actors as well. The mothers were definitely a high point for me in this show as well as the often over looked character of Fert (Piper Sigel-Bruse) I also would like to point out that this show is ENTIRELY composed of youth...the writers the actors the directors and the producers..that these kids were able to tackle this project and produce a show that is an incredible piece of work certainly deserves a round of applause...BRAVO cast of audish!!! this show should definitely be cast in your schedule..

OKAY, if I as a 12 to 14 year old suburban girl I might get this. It was a lot of over the top performances held together by a weak plot. The only thing this show had going for it was some nice singing voices. There was a review of "Your No Fun" that said that show is close to crossing the line of reliance to audiences not involved in theatre. Audish crosses that line.

These actors are very talented and the writing was interesting. It was a fun play, some things seemed to be said just because they could be, and the end was alittle easy. All in all I good show just needs alittle more meat to it.

When I heard Audish was written by a couple of high school boys, my curiosity sparked. However when i saw the show, i felt really disappointed and i had wasted my money.
Kiana Adams as Bunny had a voice that positively stole the show. However, her acting was a little lacking compared to the brilliance of Anders Nerheim. I was a little disappointed that the roles of Fert(piper sigel-bruse) and Seify (Zach Mahler) had the potential to take the show in a very funny, way. I also thought the two moms were simple but excellent additions to the show. The scene between the moms and Fert was the best point in the show. There were alot of very funny moments, but overall, i felt like i was left in the dark. I felt like everyone was in on a joke that the audience wasn't allowed to know. I also thought Dylan Frederick wearing the girly shorts, was highly unnecessary and completely inappropriate. I almost felt offended. One thing that was great about this show was the great comedic timing of the wonderful Amy Stockhaus as Tara. Everything about her character was 100% well thought and highly developed. I also felt that Rebecca Hurd(jessica) outburst was completely random and unnecessary as the musical number about water. I wont even get started on Megan Collis undedication to finding her character. Madee Weisner(Paz) was a random, but not unnecessary funny addition to this exclusive show.
I would not recommend this show to anyone, unless they like being left out of a joke.

I was genuinely impressed by many aspects of this show. Good actors, performances, and writing for a high school group. However, as odd as it sounds, it's hard to pull off absurd, bizzare humor. At times they did and it was hilarious. Other times it was too far. It was the kind of absurdity that was more confusing than funny and left me strangely uninterested. Overall, it is fun, strange, and a great effort.

Randomness with some funny dialogue

Although rather slow moving, the character bits and absurdist dialogue worked ... for awhile. There were some very funny bits but too few and far between. The "stage-mom" vignettes had potential, but felt underdeveloped (as well as Seify and Fert). I kept thinking "did I miss something?" I will say that the actors did a great job with what they had to work with in the script. I guess it's just not my type of theatre.

I came into this show not really knowing what to expect, only that I knew one of the playwrites. Boy was I in for a treat.
The story of trying out for anything is something, I think, we can all relate to, as we all have a bit of each character in all of us. Whether it be super friendly like Tara or that unmistakeable superiority that Bunny posseses, this is a look in the mirror for anyone who sees this show.
Great character development, all the actors were really committed to their roles. I was falling off my chair laughing the entire time, almost to tears. If there was a higher rating, I would certainly give it!

Lots of silly high points brought to the stage... a ridiculous overshot of what it is like to audition. Amusing in some ways, but way too over the top. I remember laughing in the beginning, you got me with the first view of the short shorts, but after a while the jokes get old, the water pouring gets old... but never ever did I tire of Anders and his comic wit. AH! With more work to smooth out the dead spots, I think the potential is good. Either take it up a notch and make it a musical or take out the bit of music that just didn't fit. Weird. But I love that kids put it all together and gave it a shot. Brave, bold, fun!

Spinning this tale of an actors nightmare-like audition, the ensemble wonderfully creates a world where we can both love and hate the process. Overprotective stage mothers, nervous ingenues, manic directors, and an empowered boy toy casting assistant litter the stage with banter and physical dexterity in this hilarious skewering of the "business."
To call this group of actors "kids" is a misnome that needs some clarification. These actors are young but with a depth of theatrical experience that far surpasses many adults. They have applied this experience in a sort of comic thesis that reveals a jewel at every turn.
This may very well be a debut of an ensemble of new professionals that should not be missed. Get your tickets now cause the encore will be sold out.

I was pumped to see Audish and it was everything i had hoped for. However, there were definitely parts that i would have loved to see more of. I personally could have watched Amy Stockhaus' character for hours and not gotten tired of it. And Creepy Seify Zach Mahler was quite hilarious in his two minutes. And who doesn't love FERT? Oh man. i loved it. Period end of story. Go see it. If you don't love it - "you can kill me, K?"

Oh - and i think everyone has overlooked a character or two when reviewing - the Nancy's were definitely also a highlight.

And i think i'm going to stay away from mentioning anything about the ending...

I chuckled and the show did make me happy, but I must say at some points the show just seemed to loose its focus. like the random musical number? and people freaking out for very little reason, the ending also left a lot to be desired. I enjoyed the fun they had very much. but there just needs to be some loose screws tightened.

The individual talents in this show of auditioners were fun to watch, from the great "Annie" song to other comic bits. And the interviewer was quite a basket case. The huge Jeune Lune stage made this show spread out far too widely, I felt, and it got a bit sloppy - at least on opening night. Probably struck a chord with many auditioners, however.

I must admit, I was a little skeptical going into the show, and while I am pleased that it exceeded my expectations, it was by no means a perfect show. The cast was strong as a whole, although Amy Stockhaus was the definite stand out among them. I would have loved to see more from Zach Mahler who had a brilliant, but all too short, appearance. The show lost me with it's random song and dance scene, as well as the awkward and unnecessary freak outs. All in all it was a pretty entertaining piece of theater.

Audish is about 5 completely different stereotypical girls coming to an audition, and having an extremely odd time. While this show was halarious, and I was laughing the entire time, some of the plot was a little too random for me. Although, the great acting from the cast made this show very entertaining. ...it would be "Audish". I went into Audish expecting a good time, and a strong cast of talented performers. It gives you so much more than that.

Anders Nerheim and Dylan Frederick are brilliant in their witty and original writing, directing, producing, acting, and making the audience laugh.

"Audish" is exactly what you want to see when you walk into a show. It's a incredibly-written script without a hint of saccharine sappiness, horrible predictability, or eye-rolling bad jokes.

Stand-outs from the absolutely incredible cast include Nerheim and Frederick themselves, as well as Kiana Adams with an unbelievable voice, Amy Stockhaus with comedic timing and style akin to a young Sarah Silverman, and Rebecca Hurd for walking a fine line between dramatic and comedic flawlessly and effortlessly, making you notice her character even when she doesn't come to the forefront until the end of the show.

Megan Collins is equally brilliant as Calliope, and brings a unexpended gentleness to her character and to the show. Madee Weisner flawlessly depicts the character of Paz, and Zach Mahler and Piper Sigel-Bruse leave you wanting more in their all-too small parts.

When you go to see a teen show, there's a certain bar you set: A low one. People don't usually seek out work done entirely by teens, out of fear that it will end up being something like: "Mean Girls: The Musical!" However, Audish is incredibly sophisticated and well beyond the years of it's teenage development staff and cast.

Keeping you laughing all the way through, Audish is truly a gem in this year's Fringe Festival and one of the best Fringe shows I have seen in years.

All too often, when folks go see young adults do a show, they expect to see something cute. Something with real effort and even some talent. These kids are much more than that.

Each took their characters to an extreme and it made for a very quirky show. Anders Nerheim brought on laughs not with extreme physicality, but just his playful banter. Kiana Adams' voice cannot be denied. Neither can her acting. The entire cast was incredibly strong.

My only beef with this show was just how outrageous it could get at times. Sure, some gags were funny or entertaining, but characters randomly freaking out at each other with little provocation left me puzzled. There was a musical number that seemed to come from nothing other than to say, "Hey, look how random this show is."

Still, I will say this isn't a show to miss. It's a great mix of teen comedy without being a children's play.
