My favorite

Perhaps the best and my favorite Fringe show I have ever seen. 3 Sticks is an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Plus, they're all really great people. Good on ya, 3 Sticks.

Well Done, 3 Stickeroos!

This show was neato! I was watching so intensely, that at one point, I almost choked on my gum. I coughed quite a bit and really annoyed the person next to me. In conclusion, sometimes you should spit your gum out before seeing a show.

Wow! Sneaked up on me!

This started slowly, but developed richness and complexity as it moved along. That hour was just too short! These are talented performers who clearly enjoy what they do.

Great music & creative prop/object use
by Florence Brammer Follow this reviewer

These talented performers served up some great music and used props, lighting and objects so cleverly. I never felt engaged on an emotional level and would have liked a bit more of a "story" in some sections, but it was very imaginative and visually arresting.

Very Professional Performance

These are clearly very talented people. They did some really cool things with their props. But I didn't quite get the story.

I found that I could only focus on the music or the action but not both, and a lot of times I was more interested in the music.

A Journey

Astonishingly staged production that changes the definition of "up". With just a few props, minimal lighting cues and a live singer, the show morphs not just the location but the locale. The plot is thin, though effectively presented, and the performance only lasts 45 minutes, so it almost loses a kitty but I had too much fun so it stays at four. A Shockwave Radio Theater Review.

A show in need of a story

I did enjoy the show, but a good story combines all the elements into a cohesive whole, which was lacking here.

How do they think of this stuff?

You will find yourself wondering again and again how this group of talented performers put together this original piece. A fantastic use of the Jeune Lune stage. Inventive, visually impressive, and mesmerizing. And the music performance is absolutely a wonder to watch as Andrew Lynch electronically layers his guitar, his voice and percussion (on the guitar) into an unbelievable soundscape that left me yearning for a CD of the whole thing.

The story is simple, but it's just enough to weave the scenes together. A beautiful performance. Do not miss this show.

Nothing short of captivating

I have never seen anything from 3 STICKS before and now will never miss another. The Gypsy and the General is a prime example of the beauty of the imagination and theatre. Each component of the show made it ravish with sheer elegance and animation. The live music made you transcend into each picture of the storyline while the use of minimal props, gracefully articulate movements and four wonderful performances brought to life a simple story that could wisk you away. An excellent hour of theatre by far.

Not Quite

Some well done loop pedal created music and really creative versatile use of a few props, resulting in a handful of unique and interesting sequences, lots of fun, but the story that tied these elements together was so utterly lacking and over acted that i found myself cringing and waiting for the next scene.

Brilliant

What did I like? The story, choreography, dancing, singing, writing, the novel use of props and space... Thus-far it's tied for number one.

An utterly brilliant performance. A MUST SEE.

Nonstop incredible

If there was a moment in this show that wasn't simply breathtaking, I must have blinked during it. I was constantly impressed by how four people could fill a space like the Jeune Lune and turn it into a living visual masterpiece. I was honestly exhausted for all of the actors, as well as the sole musician who created full pieces before our eyes. There was no aspect of this show I could call lacking. This is an impressive group that I will certainly keep my eye on.

Great performance, thin story
by August Berkshire Follow this reviewer
Rating 4 kitties
I give all aspects of the performance of this play 5 kitties: music, singing, characters, actors, movement, use of props, and use of space. Unfortunately, the story is only worth 2 kitties. So, overall, I'd give this 3.5 kitties. But we aren't allowed to give half kitties so I will round up to 4 kitties.

Filling the void
by Jonas Goslow Follow this reviewer
Rating 5 kitties
The music was indeed stellar, and at times drew my attention more than the story... but still, I thought with some more rehearsal time, this show would be worthy of spot in a Jeune Lune season... and in it's absence, look to companies like this to fill the void. Simple, poetic, and adventurous... everything theater should be.

Inventiveness trumps half-baked plot
by James Proescholdt Follow this reviewer
Rating 4 kitties
The plot is half-baked and the show ends pretty abruptly, but the sheer inventiveness of the rest of the production makes up for it. The songs are enjoyable, the staging (and prop work) amazing and the performances fun. The cast has strong singing voices, good dance numbers and an engaging connection to the audience.

Extremely Gifted Company

The story didn't have the emotional impact to match the genius of the staging, the inspiration of the performances and the colors and textures of the music... Almost sublime.

Completely Inventive

It was thrilling to watch this company work. With just a few pieces of pipe, cloth, an overhead projector, and an oil drum, these immensely talented performers created whole worlds. I was continually impressed as they discovered new ways to use their bodies and their props. The movement is lovely as well. While I'm generally impressed by people jumping on one another, but their contact look effortless and they told the story with every part of their body. If you can make it out to the Jeune Lune, come see this company beautifully fill that beautiful space.

The pure imagination and flights of fancy that make up this show are such a delight to behold. A small, tight cast truly fills the cavernous space of the Jeune Lune with an epic tale told with the simplest objects and the most dynamic performances. I hope lots and lots of Fringers get a chance to see this one!

I Love This Company!

My obsession with 3 Sticks started with Mythed. The CD is still in my iPod Rotation! I absolutely loved this show. Incredibly directed and acted. Jason is hilarious as always...and "Girl" is an amazing dancer! The imagination of this company can make any ordinary object: a barrel, a piece of string, cloth into just about anything and anywhere! GO TO THIS SHOW! You will not be disappointed!

Bravo!

I really enjoyed this piece. The ideas that they came up with -- the hot air balloon, the desert and more -- brilliant and surprising and FUN. Loved the singing. Loved their energy. Loved their commitment. Ensemble created theatre lovers will truly enjoy this piece -- and maybe even steal some ideas for their own work! I would love to work with this company sometime and their work needs to be supported in this community. This is a must see!

Music best part of the show

For me, the highlight of this was Andrew Lynch's performance. Definitely someone I will keep my eye on, and feel awful that I haven't heard of him before.

The show is as fun and humorous as 3 Sticks' previous Fringe shows have been. It just seemed a little loose. It should tighten up with future performances. (I attended the opening show.)
