Minnesota Fringe Festival

LICK! is the sexiest, most artistically satisfying and emotionally engaging dance company the world has ever known. After a four-year banishment from the Minnesota Fringe Festival (for being too sexy), LICK! returns to the Southern Theater to inject art into your soul with its great, big syringe of sexiness.
From The Mechanical Division (producers of the 2006 Minnesota Fringe Festival hit Cannibal! The Musical) comes The Return of LICK!.
WARNING: Prolonged exposure to LICK! may cause your genitals to overheat and/or explode.

"these four randy jazz-pants-wearing fellows prove they are too sexy for any very funny you'll feel a bit ashamed of yourself."

The cast

Brian Michael Flanagan
Role: Brian
Brian has been living in Brooklyn, New York since 2006. Before moving to New York in 2006, Brian lived in Minneapolis and worked as an actor at The Guthrie Theater in The Pirates of Penzance and As You Like It. He also worked at Bloomington Civic Theatre and Highland Summer Theatre. Roles include Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, Robert in Company, Cliff in Cabaret, Che in Evita, Axel Hammond in The Nerd, and Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Brian has a Bachelors Degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato (Theatre Performance Major, Music Minor) and is currently attending graduate school at Columbia University-Teachers College for a Master's Degree in Arts Administration. Currently working at the Guthrie Theater as an intern in the Marketing Department, Brian is delighted to be returning to the Minneapolis stage with this sequel to the 2005 production of LICK!. Back home in Brooklyn, Brian serves as the Director of Production and is on the Board of Directors for off-off Broadway's award winning Gallery Players (TGP), where he acted in the role of Toby in Terrence McNally's off-off Broadway premiere of Dedication or the Stuff of Dreams and TGP's production of Jeanine Tesori's musical, Violet. From there Brian worked as the Associate Producer of the acclaimed Man of La Mancha and William Inge's Bus Stop, in addition to producing Thoroughly Modern Millie. In addition to his work at TGP, Brian played the leading role of Jake Jonathan in the 2007 Award Winning NY Fringe Festival hit Show Choir: The Musical! This fall, Brian will return to New York and will serve as co-producer for TGP's opening production of its 43rd season, John Guare's House of Blue Leaves.

Bobby Gardner
Role: Bobby
Bobby is very excited to be performing again in the MN Fringe Festival. He was last seen at the Fringe in 2006 in The Mechanical Division's production of Cannibal! The Musical. Currently, Bobby can be seen in The Brave New Workshop Saves the Planet, or Yes We Can, But do We Have To? at the Brave New Workshop. Bobby has spent the last 2 years as an actor/writer/improviser in the Brave New Workshop's mainstage company. Other theatre credits include Chanhasen Dinner Theatre, Troupe America, Actor's Theatre of MN, MN Festival Theatre, and The Mechanical Division. Bobby does not belong to any union and could really use some health insurance. Anyone got a guy?

Patrick Kozicky
Role: Patrick
Patrick is extremely excited to be back at the MN Fringe Festival. He is moderately excited to be working on this show. He feels he can do better, but...tough times, right?
Patrick was last seen on stage in American Sexy, with The New Theatre Group, at last year's Fringe. Favorite shows include: Cannibal! The Musical, with The Mechanical Division, Mr. Marmalade, with Walking Shadow, The Diary of Anne Frank with Park Square Theatre, and The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins with The Children's Theatre Company.

Ben Thietje
Role: Ben
Ben was most recently seen at the Old Log Theater in productions of Forever Plaid and Incorruptible. In the past, he has acted with local companies such as Park Square Theatre, the National Theatre for Children, Troupe America, Walking Shadow Theatre Company, The Mechanical Division, the Old Creamery Theatre Company, Bloomington Civic Theatre and others. He has a degree in Theatre Arts from Minnesota State University, Mankato that gives him a leg up at most temp agencies. He is also a member of Actors' Equity Association, which is an utterly useless union despite the many proud members it seems to have. Ben would like to dedicate his performance in The Return of LICK! to Megan Fox and Trig Palin.

Sarah Bizek
Role: Booth Guy

From the reference of evil ex-fringe executive director Leah Cooper to the remains of their former LICK!mate dribbling onto the floor, the show never stops with the over-the-top sexiness. I'm already pre-gasming for next year's "The Return of the Return of LICK!"

Renew the Ban!
by Justin Alexander Follow this reviewer
Rating 4 kitties
I am hearby petitioning the Fringe Festival to renew their ban on Lick! Their sequin-festooned performance left me vastly over-sexed, and with my family's history of congenital genital heart attacks I feel my health was recklessly put at risk.

With that being said... I adored the show. In one part a satire of dance shows and in one part a comedy about the members of Lick!, the production swaps ably from one source of comedy to the next -- keeping you off-balance in a way that only heightens the comedic enjoyment.

Someone commented the other day that I must be easy to please since I give so many 5-kitty reviews - I just think this has been a great year for Fringe and Lick! is no exception.

True, it's not deep or earth shattering. It is, however, an extremely polished production full of laughter and some pretty sweet dance moves. The actors (literally and figuratively) take risks and really put themselves out there for the audience.

Good show gentlemen!

This is the "This is Spinal Tap" of boy dance. OK - Tourettes is a syndrome we shouldn't make fun of - but this is funny. The show is about the characters and their group and its history and the strikingly bad "sexy" choreography and glitter is part of the send up.

Funny for about ten minutes, if you're not in an incredibly silly mood. The jokes were predictable, the storyline was predictable, and there wasn't really anything interesting or clever about the script. The dancing was well-choreographed and funny, but again, kind of played out after a dance or two. I'm not going to say that you shouldn't go to this- but you need to be in the mood for something silly and base and repetitive.

Go See? Definitely.

Am I just batshit crazy or did some people actually show up expecting the best dancing in their lives? Idiots! LICK sold you a fucking timeshare of funny, bitches! And you bought it without leaving your pretentious baggage at the door. The door of the proverbial timeshare you just bought! Well, I got it! But then again, I don't know dance. But I like to think I know funny. And this shit is sick with funny. Like funny on AIDS. All of these guys are fucking standouts. I really appreciate the fact that these are four distinct personalities, all with their different dance styles, mannerisms, dancey facial expressions, etc. And a deep history that you're clued into right away. Well written, well performed, class act all the way. This is comedy at a higher level, aiming straight for the groin. You won't laugh harder at ANY Fringe show this year. Even MINE (and I think mine's pretty damn funny)! If I could give this one more kitty, I would, guys. I look forward (as always) to the next Mechanical Division joint.

I feel sorry for Igor (review below) - this is NOT the show to attend expecting professional dance.

These guys may be sextabulous, but they're certainly not professionals.

This show was part homage to a gelatinous fallen friend, part sex-off, part comedy routine, and all fun.

The best part of the show was of course the extremely sexitudinalized state it left my girlfriend in.

Highly recommended for those who don't take themselves, or life, too seriously.

I wish they will be awarded - with the title of "The worst show", at least of my 5 years Fringe experience. Senseless, mean, low perforance skill. Hope they enjoy themselves at least. I still can see the expression on face of ~40 years old man next to me: "what is this? What for?"

This show makes performing ridiculously simplistic dance moves in sequined shirts even funnier than it has a right to be. Each dancer brings an infectious level of commitment to his performance. Brian provides the maniacally driven, hilariously theatrical center of the show, allowing Bobby to steal it. As Shakespeare is to the art of playwriting, so is Bobby Gardner to the art of comic dance. If gales of laughter do not erupt from your throat the instant you set eyes upon him transcendently tripping the light fantastic, surely that organ beating in your chest turned cold and black long ago.

All the better for it. There isn't much to expect from four supremely hot dancers gyrating their pelvises directly into your heart, but these studs deliver their hot guns all over the stage. The show will entertain those who go into it with a clear understanding of how much sexy they can tolerate, and to those who can't tolerate sexy? There's always someone performing some piece of Shakespeare in the park for you. My only complaint is that the crazy fine choreography got a little repetitive by the end.

This was some funny stuff. The boys of LICK! return with a show which will make you grin, giggle and guffaw the pole right out of your bottom! The characters stay true to the original and are revealed in each dance through their fantastic facial expressions (1/4 of the funny). The addition of a new cast member gives this version of LICK! a fresh take and provides some of the best laughs in the piece (pay attention during the fight to the insult hurled by Bobby). All in all, this show is funnier than any film I've seen in the past year and is quite a bit sexier this time around without the Kelly character there to ugly things up. Enjoy!

Lick! is a very clever show that sustains itself on a slim self-reflexive premise--that the troupe had been banned from the Festival for being too sexy in 2005. This turns out to be a questionable self-delusion, but the guys milk it for all it is worth. They resemble the best work of Will Farrell, Bill Murray, Chris Kattan and other SNL comedians who do ridiculous routines (like cheerleading) with such deep commitment that it becomes funny. About half way through the show, it suddenly becomes apparent that the silly dance routines, hip thrusts and all, have been meticulously rehearsed and are really perfectly coordinated. There is deep comedy here. No onw will leave this performance without a smile.

There once was a Fringe show named lick that had nothing to do with there ***** like I had hoped. No, these were no Lickendales but 4 regular folks, your brother, or father, the milkman or plumber dressed in there black tights dancing there hairy butts off. They danced to and fro with the heart of Tom Jones. I peed my pants twice (first chair in the last row)and forgot all my woes. You should have seen all those pussycats laughing and clapping and being restored. I guess it doesn’t always matter how great you can dance but the depth of your heart and how far you will go to make someone smile.

I kept wondering why this show which is silly and pointless kept me so entertained. Yes, the charm of the actors had something to do with it. On the drive home, I thought about the ability of friends to hurt each other, the insecurity about sex appeal of young men, the vanity of performers and lots of other little themes that made me appreciate the deceptively simply writing. The cast were all great although I do have to say that Ben is the sexiest! Also fun to hear some narration from the uber talented E.J Subkoviak (who was in the audience). Lick is pure entertainment and a little bit more!
