My Fringe

Show reviews by Mic Weinblatt

I Love You (We're F*#cked)
Very entertaining! by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 5 kitties
Kevin Thornton is a charismatic performer, charming, funny and very likeable.Though his humor sometimes veers to GLBT blue,he somehow, manages to hold the audience in the palm of his hand and calm their concerns with humor and very agreeable singing. His performance at the HUGE was intimate and very very funny.

7 (x1) Samurai
7 Samurai by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 5 kitties
This one man performance was the first I saw at the Fringe and a great start to my Fringe adventure.David Gaines, a remarkable physical performer, displayed amazing facility and technique with mime and movement. He created a world with an inflection of his voice or a slight movement of his body.Wonderful show! Highly recommended.

The Friar and the Nurse
MUST SEE ! by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 5 kitties
A hidden gem of a play with superlative acting,a solid touching script and featuring two of the best performances I've seen at the Fringe. You owe it to yourself to seek it out.

Twisted Apples
Superb performers deliver by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 5 kitties
Twisted Apples based on Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg Ohio was a delicate, truly lovely adaptation by Jim Payne and Robert Elhai and directed by Ben Krywosz.Nora Long as the tormented Elizabeth gave a heart-breaking performance that produced chills as a fragile woman barely holding it together.Gary Briggle contributed a strong compelling performance as her husband and as the doctor and Joshua Hinck as the attentive son rendered a sensitive performance inan abbreviated role. I would like to have seen and heard more of him.Congratulations to all. Nautilus always delivers compelling productions.

Sousepaw: A Baseball Story
Powerful Play , not to be missed by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 5 kitties
This powerful play in the tradition of Sam Shepard provides a fleeting glimpse into the lost hopes and broken dreams of two lonely people. Their lives were rendered palpable by the stunning work of James B. Kennedy and Ariana Venturi under the the direction of Luke Harlan.I was riveted by the performances , the staging and the palpable sense of dispair projected by this pair of wonderful actors. Don't miss this one!

Balls Out!

I loved this show. It was funny, inventive and beautifully sung. The six guys delivered an off- Broadway style performance packed with humor and tight harmonies.Who knew puberty was this much fun!

Tempests
Tempests by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 4 kitties
This mash up of Tempest and Aliens was the closest performance to a spectacle I've seen at the Fringe, Large cast, exciting soundtrack, great costumes, lots of man to man or man to woman combat and a committed cast of actors who exhibited a wide range of facility with Elizabethan verse. Standouts included:Ben Tallen,William P Studer, and Jane Froiland with special kudos to David Schneider who choreographed the fight scenes, This was a Herculean effort that was mostly successful.

Angelina Jolie is a Zionist Whore! or, Plan 9 from Baghdad
Clever premise, great video closing by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 3 kitties
This play about an inept group of insurgents was a clever idea with skillful actors but it got bogged down in the middle and the bits lost the momentum of a play and became an extended comedy skit that could have filled twenty minutes rather than an hour. The final video sequence, however, was an inspired bit of looniness that almost redeemed the earlier skit.

The Vampire Lesbians of Sodom by Charles Busch
A noble attempt by Mic Weinblatt
Rating: 3 kitties
Charles Busch is a difficult playwright to produce. His plays ,while campy, outrageous and completely over the top, need a gentle touch so the audience doesn't focus only on the sophomoric humor but on the goofy John Water's spirit of fun. With the exception of Mark Hooker and Margaret McDonald, the rest of the cast were content to attack their roles with a baseball bat rather that a slapstick. Lots of potential and silly costumes didn't serve this loopy play as well as it deserved.
