"Pick it up! Pick it up!"
by Eric Salo
Rating 3 stars
Good: Excellent voices. Matthew Frazier-Smith cranked out a near-perfect "For Emily" and followed it up with a very respectable "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". As someone who grew up on S&G, I was impressed.

Not So Good: Singing is only part of the package! S&G songs also include classic guitar riffs and for the most part these were conspicuously absent.

Good: Some very amusing gags built into the songs, including best use of a kazoo in the entire Fringe.

Not So Good: The banter between songs was very weak.

These guys have an obvious and infectious love of S&G. With better writing and especially some more guitar work this could become a particularly good cover act. Not quite there yet but keep it up!

Much more amusing than I'd anticipated, plus these guys can really sing. An hour well spent.

Wish it were just the music. . .

Two stars for some well-sung S&G songs and a cute Aaron Neville impersonation. The banter between songs, however, was tired, tiresome and pretty dismal. Very little laughter from the audience for the performance I attended.

Great Performers, Funny Send-Up

I like to think this show is skewering the Baby Boom generation a bit because they deserve it.
These are two talented singers/guitar players/actors who pretend to work through their issues while celebrating Simon & Garfunkel. It works really well, especially one particular voice impression (thank you for that one guys).
Well worth your time.

Their love of S&G music is evident. Their musical talent (both taking turns on guitar- would have loved more egg shaker, tho!) is definitely there too, sporadic tuning issues aside. I felt their banter could have been a bit more plot-driven. Enjoyable show overall.

Harmonic convergence, no plot

These guys are clever, whatever they do. They can definitely sing. They clearly love S&G harmonies well enough to both sing and oversing them. There just isn't much story to the show. Go for the musical tribute and the New-Agey laughs - the show starts before the lights go down!

A send up on a tribute works

Smith and Bourdet are right on in creating Simon and Garfunkel vocally. What makes their satire on a tribute duo of "Scarborough and Fair" so enjoyable is that through the goofiness the musc does live. This is every bit as good as their Opera send up in last years fringe.

Good songs. Good Times.

These boys are cute AND they can sing and mostly play the guitar too! (OK, they sound phenomenal) And also there was a shakey-egg. My favorite is when they pass the guitar back and forth. And also when they randomly thank you. And also the story of how they met, because who doesn't love a dramatic story about meeting one's best bestie? Big hearts for Empire State of Mind.

The music was well done and I enjoyed the histrionics and general silliness of this not-really-that-poignant 2-man extravaganza of velvety mirth, complete with moustache.

My husband was mystified by the constant references to Simon and Garfunkle (may they rest in peace) but I thought it was funny so...who can say?

Party on Scarborough. Party on Fair.

I really enjoyed this show. They do a near perfect job of performing some of the best of Simon and Garfunkel. Interspersed throughout the songs is some great comedy. The duo works together very well and their comedic timing is good. It was the perfect mix of nostalgia and hilarity. This show is definitely worth seeing!

It is hard not to enjoy the music in this show, which is very well done. Some of the comedy is a bit forced, but it's funny and light and for those familiar with Simon and Garfunkel songs, it's just good fun.

Enjoyable performances of some great music, intertwined with some charming silliness. Fun!

The two performers did a wonderful job taking the stage and making the songs their own. The singing was nice and some of the banter was very funny. However - at times the banter and dialogue between songs felt forced, unnatural and potentially a bit offensive.
Go for the songs - ignore everything else.

Well, thanks to these guys, I’ve not been able to get Simon & Garfunkel tunes out of my head for several days. Their intended concept, however, is unclear to me – they sing the songs well enough and do patter. OK - the Real S&G can do that and get away with it because they’re musical gods. But this patter didn’t seem like it knew where it was going; it wasn’t serious digs about the duo’s historied differences, or made-up stories about the songs – it’s just sort of flat. I hope they’re paying royalties.

OK, I love Simon and Garfunkel so the music was a given. Scarborough & Fair, (Matthew Frazier-Smith and Brendan Johnson) have excellent voices and if I was to pick the set list, it was a perfect 10! I even guessed the last song choice, it seemed so obvious to me. As others have noted, the writing could have been better but all-in-all what better way to spend a warm summer evening reliving Simon and Garfunkel. Not to be missed!

Musically hilarious bro-mance!

These guys rock! The entire show carries you through non-stop hilarity and musical entertainment. The talent that these two have as a musical duo (resurrecting the late Simon and Garfunkel's memorable work) and as a comedic pair is an excellent delight to watch. They cover many S&G's work very well. If you're in the mood to see a light-hearted show made of S&G copulation, fused with the bantering bro-mance of Scarborough and Fair, Scarborough Fair is the show for you!

Good singing, not much else

Frazier and Justin can sing, and as others have pointed out, these harmonies aren't easy. It's too bad that the scripting and concept are so weak. I'd love to see these guys with a better writer.

Not Quite Fully Formed

You really have to be a Simon and Garfunkel fan to appreciate this show. If you don't know their music, you will be hard-pressed to like this show. Frazier Smith and Justin Bourdet have talent as musicians, but their show was an odd mix of occasionally successful comedy and pretty decent covers. In a handful of cases where the comedy did work, the follow-through was ineffective, so their intermusical banter lost momentum. I expected a Smothers Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel mashup, but the comedy didn't rise to that level of quality. My most enjoyable moments in the show were where they honored Simon and Garfunkel as inspiration but did original adaptations or variations on that theme instead.

Are you going?

This was a pleasant show by two somewhat odd-ball musicians bent on bringing music by Simon and Garfunkel back to the masses. The banter between the two was funny and a bit awkward...reminding me a bit of Flight of The Conchords. Some songs were done very well, others were deliberately mangled for laughs. Not a bad show.

I didn't know what to expect with this one, but I love S&G Music and I knew these guys have been on the Fringe circuit so I thought I would give it a shot. I was not disappointed. They are really good and have a great show. Go see it. You will not be disappointed.

Simon and Garfunkel...alone this should make it pure greatness. Does it do anything to have non-S and G people sing the songs. Even with a but of comedy? Not very theatrical. Maybe we all needed to rock and hold up our cel phones. Gonna go listen to my old 8-traks on the ride home tonight!

Great!

I don't know if this is a comic routine with S&G songs or S&G songs with a comic routine.
Two Beautiful voices from two beautiful people. Highly recommended.

These guys are entertaining comedians, but they pull off the music as well. As a singer, I know that the Simon and Garfunkel sound is deceptive in its simplicity. It requires careful, spot-on tuning and tone control in a very high range. The only time anything slipped intonationally was in a brief segment where the duo are re-imagined as rap artists.

The whole performance was incredibly polished, so maybe it was intentional.

So Lovely

I saw Frazier and Justin's preview at the out-of-towners showcase and immediately put them on my schedule. Their voices are wonderful, and if you're a Simon and Garfunkel fan, the songs themselves are worth a slot in your schedule. Beyond that, they are funny and charming. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. And the audience members around me seemed to enjoy themselves as well. I was charmed.
