Class of 98

They say there's no such thing as second chances. Well, "they" forgot about time-travel. Mike and Lloyd are going back to school. Literally.
They say there's no such thing as second chances. Well "they" forgot about time-travel, didn't they? Mike and Lloyd are going back to school. Literally.
From the creators of "Our Freaking Kids Show" and "JENGA!" comes this hilarious adventure of awkward teen romance, inspirational accidental teaching, and scientifically accurate time-travel antics. You know, one of those.

Perfect shtick.
by Feba Hauer
Rating 4 stars
Perfect use of nineties song references, perfect balance of comedy and bromance. Hilarious, though not quiiiiiiite as hilarious as I expected. Still, a delight. And Tucker STOLE. THE. SHOW. We'll be seeing amazing things from that kid in Fringes to come.

Lots of high-energy comedy. The kids were cute and funny. I had a really good time.

The packed house at TRP really loved this show. I missed some of the humorous cultural references. Perhaps timing is everything.
I found the cast to be competent, skilled performers joyfully presenting their piece. I loved the hour we spent together, even if I did not laugh when everyone else did. Class of 98 earned their applause for a strong ensemble & respectable dedication.
Almost too much awesomeness.

Most of this show felt like one of those old FedEx commercials with the guy talking a mile a minute; they packed a LOT of lines into this show and yeah, sometimes it was hard to hear it all. But that energy was also part of what made the show so much fun. I had a great time.

I really enjoyed this show. They perform at break-neck speed (probably to get under 60 minutes), but it works nicely. If you haven't seen this one, you're in for a fun time.

There was SO much to tell you about this, but if you are a child of the 80s/90s, just see it already!

This is a highly enjoyable show! Josh knows how to get an audience laughing, Andy is incredibly charming and Dan is always hilariously understated. It's a great ensemble!
The show is packed with jokes and references - you don't need to know all of the references to get all of the jokes, but if you grew up in the 90s, this will really bring you back!
Really really funny

Class of 98 was the funniest thing I've seen all year. The adults are uproarious and the teens are skilled and a joy to watch. Andy Kraft's incredible hip snap brought the audience to its knees, especially when we found out he has a broken rib. This group has the story and the moves to tell it.

Class of 98 gets the award so far for making me laughing harder than I have at any other show at the fringe. If you went to high school in the nineties I think this show just might be for you.

by Ryan Vanasse
Rating 5 stars
I can't talk enough about how much I love this show. I want so badly to go back, but I'm worried that I'll be taking a seat that a new person could use to watch this.
The jokes whiz by fast and furious, but the story is densely plotted as well--this is a show that respects both its 90s high school comedy and time travel movie roots. Josh and Andy have a frenetic presence and the young performers are great, especially at mirroring their future selves.
Ultimately, I wish this were a movie so I could watch it again and again to get all the jokes, and so it could be longer. It's a shame that will never happen.
Fast and Funny!
by Kathleen Cossette
Rating 5 stars
This show was great! Very funny and very high energy. The writing was great and the actors did an incredible job, especially the younger teenage characters. The delivery was fast paced and their is seriously a joke every ten seconds! You will, like most reviews say, miss some jokes but there are so many coming at you that you wont mind. Special shout out to Andy Kraft for doing the play with a broken rib and still managing to steal the show with his time travel alter-ego character. A must see fringe show!

This was a lighthearted and well performed ride with fun twists and turns and a fantastic sense of humor. I would highly recommend this show to anyone who enjoys a good pop-culture reference or even if you just like to laugh at quirky, crazy one-liners.
Early for nostalgia.
by Corinna Troth
Rating 4 stars
As a cute time travel story, this is fun and well performed. Is 14 years really long enough to develop nostalgia for a time period? I'm not quite sure. The accent music really was quite abrubt and loud - It's meant to be brief and, hey this is the fringe so...It's not overly challenging, but it's got lots of amusing moments, lines, gags etc.
Witty

Fun and witty. Made me think about going back to the past.....maybe not. Only thing I would have liked, is if everybody would talk a little slower so I could catch ALL of the funny parts.
Angst and comedy transend era.
by Todd Demerath
Rating 5 stars
A very clever, sharp, comedy about the dream of changing out past, this show had me laughing from start to finish. The frenetic energy of both script and cast may leave you feeling a bit rushed, but the sheer amount of humor packed into this hour will leave you satisfied even if you miss a punchline or two.
Regardless of your recall of the late 90's, the common experiences of high schoolers and adults who never quite escaped (or at least never forgot) their high-school experiences are the real essence of this show. Those feelings and experiences are brilliantly portrayed by the lead actors and their excellent teenage counterparts.
Buy your tickets early and don't miss this one.
For Connoisseurs of '90s Pop Culture

This fast-paced and absolutely hilarious comedy features a great, lively cast and should absolutely be seen. It's an especially great show for those who get '90s pop culture references, but will be enjoyed by all. Go catch their last show!
Such a great script!
by Max Wojtanowicz
Rating 4 stars
You can tell everyone onstage is having a ton of fun, and the audience gets totally swept up in the bodacious 90s humor. My only critique is that it feels like a 90-minute show performed in 60 minutes -- everything went by SO fast that some of the jokes don't have a chance to land before we fly on to the next one. With a script this funny, I wanted more time to breathe!
The '90s Were a Dark Time...
by Collin Knopp-Schwyn
Rating 5 stars
But that's okay! Class of 98 did was a lovely romp with a great script that was only muddled occasionally by its own cleverness. Carson is a swell double threat, too, as both a great writer and hilarious whirlwind of manly acting. The mix of young and normal-aged actors was really fun as both were effectively presented as equals, and I especially liked Sulia Altenberg for her spunk and ability to keep up with the adult cast. If I have one qualm, and I do, it's that the theater-in-the-round presentation ate up numerous lines, many of which were funny and especially from the younger actors (though everyone lost at least a line or two to the space). Still, though, a really fun show. Lotsa' jokes about the '90s and time paradoxes and stuff.
How It Used To Be
by David Rust
Rating 5 stars
A time-travel comedy about two self-admitted losers who want to go back and fix their lives when they were just teenagers in High School. The how is not only unimportant it's also hilariously blown off by the two even as the scientist trying to describe it attempts to drive home how important it is that they not mess things up.
Of course, they don't listen.
Even though I'm a child of the 70's and my high school years were the early 80's, the jokes were not lost on me. Rapid-fire dialogue and hilarious situations make this fast-paced show the equal of any professional production. The performers all held their own with the script and each other while deftly dropping references to life in the late 90's.
I Don't Have To Go To My Reunion Now!
by Tristine Miller
Rating 4 stars
It was fun, fast-paced show and I can safely skip my 20-year reunion now as it's likely to be a mash-up of this performance. Perhaps my old-school PSEO attitude coming forth, but for reals, high-school kids are so blasé. Add +15 years to the registrar and it's the same ole' s--t, just a different day.
I found the kids in the show to be top-notch! They commanded presence! They made me laugh! And they amazed me at every turn. And I can say that and not have to declare I'm on some registry.
The adult cast was stereotypical for what I have seen, but they kept me laughing at the old jokes and memories from back in the day. Sometimes I felt the adult story was a bit weak, but at least they had some great kids to steal the show!

My favorite show of the festival! This was a fast-paced, funny, witty, smart and clever production. The best time-travel show I've ever seen & probably will ever see. The actors are all amazingly talented and their high energy was contagious! The only negative of this show is at times the audience is still laughing and you miss the next funny line. Don't miss this one!
I really like them apples
by Katie Starks
Rating 5 stars
You know who is one of the funniest human beings on this planet? Josh Carson. Duh-Doy. I consider myself a share-holder in this brand of comedy, as I willingly pay for it every time. While all of the adult actors gave stellar performances, I gotta say, the teens in this show stole it like you would a Persian rug to replace the one that “tied the room together.” Also, I would love a copy of the soundtrack.
not worth the hype
by Frayed Edge
Rating 2 stars
I got all of the jokes in this, and laughed a bit, but the good jokes weren't crucial to the story. No deep belly laughs, but a lot of chuckles. The story is good, the script fine, although it drags at times. One of the principals delivering every line screaming left little depth. Musical references all seemed coarse or poorly timed.
Editing or fresh eyes directing could make this great. The youth actors were by far the highlight, and were all excellent.
Scale:
0-Terrible
1-Tell your friends not to go
2-A bad fringe show, below par for the festival. Don't Bother
3-Worth seeing, don't go out of your way.
4-Good to Great. Make time for this show.
5-Absolutely outstanding. A great show, festival or otherwise.

98 Calfs. So?
by Brian Watson-Jones
Rating 5 stars
This was hilarious. As a member of the class of '99, I heard songs and references that dragged me, in some cases forcibly, back to those years. As is usual with Mainly Me, the jokes come so fast that the biggest danger is in missing something because you're still responding to the last one. My show is in this venue, and I'm hoping that these guys get the encore. Freakin' fantastic comedy.
One of the Best!

Rating 4 stars
One of the best to see at Fringe. Fuuny show. Great cast. Good (not great) story, I really like time travel. Very hard to hear some of the lines. Sit close to the floor in the section just to the right of the entrance as you walk into the theatre.
Mostly uninteligible
by David Trudeau
Rating 2 stars
In order to enjoy this I need to hear and understand it. The language was rushed and overridden by laughter with no pause and the actors were facing away much of the time. My wife - whose hearing is more acute than mine -concurred. Our son, clearly amused by the play, explained that it was all a send up on the "Back to the Future" movies and probably would have been better presented in a proscenium with an additional twenty minutes so the actors could take time to enunciate their lines and ride the laughs.
Strap In!

I knew this would be good going into it, but I’d forgotten just how funny Our Freakin’ Kids Show was last year. Carson, Kraft, & Co. deliver joke after joke without slowing down to let the audience catch their breath. That’s a good thing–if they paused for laughter, they’d bump the next show out of rotation. I know that’s not possible, but in my imaginary land, the techs love the show just as much as the audience and are granting them leniency.

I saw Class of 98 on their opening night: a night when most shows are still becoming acquainted with their venues and haven’t quite landed into their own skin, however, Class of 98 had no issue with that.
This fast-paced romp through the 90s, took the Theatre in the Round by storm. Smart staging, clever dialogue, and fantastic, high-energy performances kept the audience, and me, rolling in the aisles with laughter.
Congrats to Mainly Me Productions for producing the most entertaining show I’ve seen this fringe thus far.

Don't mind my griping, do see this show
by TJ Hara
Rating 4 stars
The Back to the Future references in this show, down to its characters' names, took me out of the show a bit, as did the abrupt musical cues (do your tech guys not have a "fade" control?) and a very fast-speaking mad scientist and some younger performers whose lines I had trouble making out at times (I blame the performer for the first and the space for the latter). Those things said, this is still a clever, funny show, and I couldn't help but laugh at a pair of lines inspired by a favorite stand-up comic's potshot at Alanis Morisette's venerated "Ironic". Class of '98 isn't a perfect show, but it's a damn good one that's well worth seeing.

Longer! Please!
by the fanta
Rating 5 stars
Innuendo aside, I wish this show could have had the longer run-time it deserved. Such a good premise and script were limited by the Fringe limits. That doesn't mean it wasn't a completely good value, I just learned early in the performance to keep my laughs short so I wouldn't miss another great line. Josh and Andy (and their SuperFriends cast-mates) are brilliant and I really look forward to all they can come up with, especially in the Over-1-hour shows. But really, see this show.
Minority Report
by Patrick Pfundstein
Rating 2 stars
Keep in mind (if you bother to read further) that the packed audience was howling with laughter throughout this show, and with plenty of good reason; the actors (especially the younger set) are good, there is a lot of clever writing, and the energy level is high (bordering on frenetic at times). But there was also a thread of meanness running through the show that was a major fun-buzz-kill for me. It showed up in a gratuitous personal insult to somebody not in the show (apologizing in the program doesn’t cut it guys), and especially in the “funny” humiliation of a teenaged kid at the end made extra creepy by adult involvement. Maybe I'm just too old for this one...

Great Show. Very funny and a good plot. The only problem i had was sometimes the actors would speak too fast and i couldnt understand what they were saying. otherwise, it was a great performance with great acting and it never failed to make me laugh.

Rating 4 stars
I wish the script would have been shorter so that we could have relished the comic moments more. But a super smart and funny show, with kudos to the overalls-and-converse-wearing Claire (I may or may not have worn that exact outfit in 1998).
Josh Carson does well.
by Jim Robinson
Rating 5 stars
All the 1990s references went over my balding head, but the premise of Mr. Carson's show is very funny and the performance was astounding. Truly, Josh has a distinctive style that has really come to fruition here. Fast, smart, funny, surprising. And Dan Hetzel is always a wonder to behold. But so is everyone in this show. I wish I were younger so I could understand what the characters were talking about, but I'm glad I'm old enough to say that Josh Carson may just grow into someone important in the comedy world. Stranger things have happened, and I've seen some of them myself. I loved this show.
Back to the Future (3)
by Scott Pakudaitis
Rating 5 stars
This is one show that needs to be expanded to about 90 minutes. The jokes flew by so quickly that the cast hardly had time to pause for our laughter. The show is frenetic and hilarious with lots of pop culture references as well. Great performances by the cast who at times seemed barely able to contain their own laughter.
Try and keep up
by Derek Miller
Rating 5 stars
Class of 98 is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time. It has so many funny things stuffed into its single hour that the sheer density is overwhelming. To get it all in, the performers start off at 100mph and only increase from there. It's a breakneck pace, and there are no pauses for laughter, but don't worry: there will be another joke landing 10 seconds later. Yes, a lot of the humor is based on referencing things those of us in our 20s and 30s grew up with, but the funniest material actually arises out of the situations created when the last two people in the world who should be allowed to time travel start meddling with the past.
Good Stuff

Rating 4 stars
Full confession, I'm 49, and a few references went over my head, but I got most of them, and if the main complaint from people my age and older is, "I don't know who/what that is." then, maybe get a little more culturally aware and realize, this show isn't for our generation.
Funny writing. Fine performances by the whole cast-adults and younger actors (I don't want to call them "kids" they're pros). Nice use of "period" music.
It's done at such a break-neck speed its hard to follow sometimes and I missed some jokes, but what I did get and hear, I laughed a lot at.
Volume is an issue in the space, when someones back is to you, as is going to happen inevitably, its going to be hard to hear that person. Still good.
Solid 4 star show.

I am happy to announce that I walked out of the theatre with an aching belly and spinning head, and it had zero to do with a flu or hangover, and everything to do with Josh Carson and Andy Kraft. That's right. Sick with laughter. SICK, I SAY.

I love this show! This is the first Mainly Me Production show I have seen and I immediately regret now seeing their fringe hit last year. Yes, some jokes and references went over my head but there is so much more to the show than that! This show had everything, fabulous writing (Kudos to Josh Carson) and acting (Andy Kraft is ridiculously funny) and an amazing cast of young actors who completely hold their own with the adults. This was defiantly the funniest show I have seen at Fringe so far. A MUST SEE!

It's "I Love the 90s" on meth, and fortunately, I do love the 90s (and not meth). While some of the opportunities for depth may have been sacrificed for jokes, this classic reference-dropping Fringe concept is easily hilarious to anyone over 25 with a TV and an appreciation for pop culture. The cast is charming, the storyline is unpredictable, except in cases where it was funnier to be predictable, and Carson delivers endless laughs that keep you giggling long after you leave. A special shout out goes to the younger members of the cast, who performed admirably in this marathon of jokes that probably had to be explained to them, because the 90s was weird -- you guys nailed it.

This was my stand-out for the day and is currently in the lead for Fringe favorite. Two geeky adults answer and add in the paper to try out a new time travel device and go back in time to their high school in 1998. In their attempts to change their own futures and be less nerdy, the pair cause all kinds of paradox problems and hilarity. The acting by the adults and the teens was fantastic and I honestly would have been happy if this went on for another hour.

Hilarious flashback to the 90s

If you want to enjoy an incredibly entertaining, silly (yet cohesive) story that flashes back to 1998 - don't miss Class of 98. This story is cleverly sewn together to include too many to count slip ins of 90s music, phrases, clothing, popular culture and dance moves. You will not stop laughing and will leave incredibly satisfied. I just might say it was better than chocolate.

Brilliant! Brilliant ! Brilliant! Were you in High School or College within 5 years of 1998? Do you have any regrets about how your life turned out since your youth? Ever wonder if you could make your life better if given a second chance? Then see this show. Writing and acting by Carson and Kraft was brilliant. I especially enjoyed the rapid fire dialogue, comedic timing, and the 90's jokes. Hats off to the writers. What surprised me most was the performance by the child actors, especially Lexi Johnson and Sulia Altenberg. All four of the 1998 high school kids showed skills way beyond their years. Definitely ones to watch!

How Fast is Too Fast?
by Lena Lyle
Rating 4 stars
This show was well acted and funny. Even the children actors were good and stood their own next to the adults. With that said, the delivery is incredibly fast. It is difficult to understand all of the dialogue and this fast talking can leave the actors tongue tied at moments. I would suggest slowing it down a bit. But it is a good show and recommended to all 90s graduates-the jokes and references are aimed at that generation.

I have seen about five shows this year so far, and this is the first I'd love to see again! Part of what made the show awesome to me, is all the slight references, right from the character names. I wasn't as amused about the 90s as most of the sellout house around me. The great comments are drawing people in, but unless you are a true fan of VH1 look backs, don't go. Loved it - felt all the players really gave it their all - well written script - totally recommend it!
Missed some but still an opportunity
by August Berkshire
Rating 4 stars
I missed about ten percent of the dialogue due to inadequate enunciation or projection. The plot also became a bit muddled at the end. These things demoted what was surely a five star play to four stars. Also, having grown up well before the 1990s, I missed a lot of the allusions that younger audience members found hilarious. Nevertheless, a very enjoyable performance that's definitely worth your time.

Fast & Funny

Hilarious movie and music references come at you at a furious pace, delivered by a cast that's totally dedicated to their material. The 90's references might be too dated for some and too recent for others but you'll find yourself pulled along for a very entertaining ride.
Both generations nailed it

High-energy time-travel comedy with an entertaining, even substantial, script and solid performances by both the thirty-somethings and their scientist/administrator colleague and their teenage former selves.
I enjoyed it thoroughly, even though I am too old for a lot of the pop-culture references that were slaying the rest of the audience.
Flashback to High School

I was a '98 graduate, so this definitely hit home for me, but anyone who even has a vague idea of pop culture in the 90's will enjoy this show. Packed with jokes from beginning to end, with some of the jokes getting such a big laugh, that the next joke got drowned out by the crowd. Great acting from both the young and old versions of the characters throughout the show.

This show is just a good time. Tumbling, pop culture, and a drinking joke or two made this a really enjoyable way to spend an evening. The frenetic pace draws you in, the energy of the actors keep you going, and the story leaves you wanting more. I definitely recommend this show!

Doesn't hurt that I'm close to a '98 graduate, but I loved Class of 98! Such a fun story, fast-paced, great wit and loved all the nostalgic pop culture blasts from the past. Heck, I wish I could get the soundtrack. Really cool, energetic cast too.
Master "Class"

Fast, fun, exciting time-travel travails, smart writing, great performances.
So many jokes....joke overload! Nothing wrong with that.
I wish they'd publish their scripts so I can re-read them and find all the jokes I missed. Unlike the person who said it seemed to "lag" near the end, I thought that helped as it gave me a chance to catch my breath and it built the suspense.
All the references are delightful and give you a great sense of nostalgia if you were in high school or college at that time, and the performances are razor sharp by both the adults and the incredibly talented younger actors. Go see this!
Exhaustingly Funny

Like a Gilmore Girls script on speed, the jokes come about one or two per second in this hilarious, high-energy comedy. Actually, high-energy doesn't begin to describe how the cast cannonballs through this story of two slightly dim guys travel back in time to their own high school.
The pacing is fast, but the story is clear, and the cast is winning. Since the play is in the round, you might want to sit close to catch all the jokes, but if you miss one, don't worry, there's three more right behind it.
Sheer time travel genius!

The minute I saw the title to this play I was hooked. As a proud graduate of the class of 1998, I rounded up 2 girlfriends, our letter jackets and headed to Minneapolis.
My expectations were BLOWN AWAY. We were treated to a high octane, reminiscent romp, that literally left me howling with laughter. The script was genius, well written and was an amazing mix of nostalgia and current events. The acting was natural and timed perfectly. The blazing pace kept us at the edge of our seats and breathless with laughter.
No matter what year you graduated, this High School/Time Travel adventure touches on so many experiences that every angst and hormone filled teenager has faced.
I could not have asked for a better first Fringe experience. Bravo

Josh Carson does it again with another hilarious, rapid fire comedy!! I will need to see it again just to catch all of the one liners! Everyone can relate to these characters from their own high school days. The cast was fantastic and the kids are top notch talent as well! If you like to laugh, go see this show!!

What Would Sorkin Think?
by Matt Peiken
Rating 4 stars
Josh Carson's bullet-train writing and pacing make Aaron Sorkin ("West Wing") look like Garrison Keillor. I don't know how someone can cram so much text into a 55-minute script, and your ear is bound to lose 30 percent of it. No matter—you'll catch more than enough gems to make up for it ("molested by whimsy!"). Carson's time-travel nostalgia only takes us back 14 years—if you're older than, say, 45, you'll shrug at some of the 1998 pop-culture references. But this agile ensemble meets the challenge of performing Carson's breakneck dialogue rather than reciting it, and you'll come away charmed with a dash of whiplash.

I'm too old to understand most of the inside movie/music/etc. references - but I still laughed my head off. The delivery was wonderfully frenetic, very high-energy, and zany good fun! The only reason for four instead of five stars was I thought the later part of the show was a bit dragged out as it approached the end. The plot just seemed to lag then, especially after the rapid early pace. Still a great show to see.
Must see

My only complaint was that the cast didn't pause long enough for the raucous laughter, and so some of the lines got lost. And I desperately wanted to hear them, as the writing was so clever I could hardly stand it. The cast was rock solid, the comedic timing spot on, and the mid-90s pop culture references hysterical. This may have topped Video Guy, an extremely impressive feat.
