Wonderfully funny !!

By Al Odden / August 12, 2013

Amazing show, the audience was totally brought into the show the entire time. As one of the volunteers to draw on the chalkboards the excitement I felt was unbelievable. The improv in this show could not have been scripted by anyone, it was just too darn funny !!!

Come for the Gimmick, Then Hurt Laughing

By Jeremy Motz / August 11, 2013

Gotta admit, was concerned if this show could hold up to the "gimmick"-y premise, but HUGE applause for the team keeping us gasping for air between laughs throughout. Extremely creative, endlessly amusing, saucy, and still family friendly! See it while you can!

Hilarious, cute, always different

By Suzanne Sharrock / August 11, 2013

This improvisatory set of sketches is constructed by audience participation - including having a couple of audience members drawing all props on chalkboards in front of the rest of the audience. The two actors themselves are genuinely excellent at improvisation, incorporating the audiences suggestions into plot construction. You could see this show multiple times and it'd be a completely different show each time. The actors play all sorts of characters - today inlcuded a lonely male dinosaur who was sore in his "nether region" from laying a (dinosaur) egg. You might have to have been there - but trust me, there was almost non-stop laughter during the entire show. See the encore if you can!

Very clever concept

By Christian Ricci / August 9, 2013

Both Petersen and Michaels do a terrific job of creating unique and funny characters. I did feel like some scenes didn't progress beyond the opening set-up and were a little boring, but the actors were good at using the hilarious chalkboard concept. It's great when either good or bad drawers participate.

Truly Creative

Want to see a show that is a real piece of art? Go see this show. Simple as that. Both Tyler and Tod are very talented improvers who make story telling an adventure for people of all ages. I was surprised to see so many children in the audience the night that I went. But I was touched by the magic of having the children there. At one point in one of their sketches they said “There was a woman who had three little girls,” and sitting in front of me was a woman with her three young daughters. As the woman pulled her kids close and all three girls gasped at the fact that the story tellers must obviously be talking about their family, I was reminded of the magic that a story can have. These boys not only created a way to make story telling fun and creative, but they are talented enough to make a new and original story come to life 4-5 times in a show. Congrats to you both for being such inventive risk takers.

So much fun! Haven't laughed that hard in a long time. These two are so creative and quick. The story lines took turns I never expected and they were hilarious. Using audience members to create props, costumes, and set pieces by drawing them on chalkboards...brilliant! So much creativity. A must see!

All It Was "Chalked Up" to Be

By Wes Mouri / August 4, 2013
This user has reviewed 1 show

When you pair up an established veteran of Twin Cities Theater like Tod Petersen with a purposeful up and comer like Tyler Michaels, you are in for something special. The concept of the show is fresh and innovative and engages the audience in a unique way. It connects with the playfulness of our inner child and with our belief that everyone should have their own "Happily Ever After." The improvisational vignette style of the show keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering which fairy tale character will appear next. The comedic material is also accessible to all age ranges. If you're looking for a show that's dynamic, inventive, and has a lot of heart, look no further than "Once Upon a Chalkboard!"

Fun for all ages

By Connor Lange / August 4, 2013
This user has reviewed 1 show

It was really fun to watch "Once upon a chalkboard".
And it was very funny. It was also fun to participate in creating props. Also it was fun to see people's drawings which could change the whole show. And the fun thing about it was all improvised. I had a great time there. Sometimes it could be silly or it might be serious. And you could come back for every show because it's always different. There is nothing negative I could say about "Once upon a chalkboard". It was great. I would recommend it to anyone of any age.

Limitless props

By Doug Lange / August 4, 2013
This user has reviewed 1 show

Outstanding creativity Tyler and Tod! These two figured out how to put a great new twist on the improv show. Their concept of audience participation drawings on chalk boards creates a limitless prop possibility for their improv mastery. The best thing about the audience drawn props is the show gets better with bad drawings. This puts the audience at ease and allows the actors true capability to surface. Well done gentlemen! Can't wait to see the show again!

Chalk one up for Improv

By Bruce Rehberg / August 4, 2013

A sold out show, I was one of the last few to make it in the door before the line got cut off (I'm glad I made it). This is my first Fringe show I've been at to be completely sold out and I can see why. This show was family friendly and used audience volunteers to draw the necessary "props" to tell the improvised stories. I had not seen this style of improv before. I like the twist. The two improvisers work well as a team and know how to have fun with their stories while working with whatever "artwork" is present to them. Applause and laughter from me.

A Roller Coaster Ride!

By Ryan Lee / August 2, 2013
This user has reviewed 2 shows

Absolutely Brilliant! Tyler Michaels is an Improv Beast and Tod Petersen his Fearless Ringleader! These two incredibly talented performers had the audience (myself included) laughing from start to finish! The audience interaction is so clever, having volunteers go out on a limb and draw for them during the scene. I especially love the way they play with these "partners in crime" and poke fun at their best attempts at drawing under such pressure. Most Importantly, the Improv is Top Notch...Tyler and Tod do not let the silliness of the chalkboards overtake their talent and ability to create really memorable characters and sketches. GO SEE THIS SHOW, YOU'LL HAVE A BLAST!!!

Chalk, Talk & Fantasy

By Jon Lahann / August 2, 2013
This user has reviewed 2 shows

Combining witty improv and fairy tales with a sort of reverse Pictionary, Tyler Michaels and Tod Peterson created a show that was creative, energetic and hilarious. The volunteer "artists" (I was one) showed that artistic talent was not necessary; often the worst pictures inspired the best lines from the performers. This was a entertaining hour representing some of the best that the Fringe has to offer.

Innovative improv & lots of laughs!

By Mindy Eschedor / August 2, 2013

Tyler and Tod are two of the most creative performers I know! Both possess a huge arsenal of character voices, and Tyler is one of the most physically versatile actors in town. They can also maintain their composure in the midst of misshapen prop and costume drawings (done by various audience members) while the rest of us were howling with delight! The drawings themselves became the subject of many jokes, woven into the various delightful fantasy/fairy-tales that comprise the show. With different audience artists and new stories each night, all 5 shows will be unique! Go! Go more than once! Guaranteed laughs from this talented duo!!

Fun with Chalk

A Super fun Fringe show to go participate in... and you will participate. As the audience you get to craft on Chalkboards their props and costumes, it's silly and fun and in my opinion a better use of my time than some other fringe shows. Interactive and funny, and an innovative style of Improv that I have yet to see before. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and think that if your goal is to go have fun this is the show to see.

A Creative Romp!

By Brian Skellenger / August 10, 2013
This user has reviewed 2 shows

Tyler and Tod have come up with an innovative take on improv with their goofy, artistic minds. The audience participation is what really sold this show for me. Old and young alike were anxious to be one of the chalkboard artists for each of the mini skits, and whether the resulting art was good or bad didn't matter. The performers went along with whatever was drawn, and the audience enjoyed every minute of it! I was amazed at how many scenes the duo could fit within the time limit, and how complete the stories all felt. Nothing seemed rushed, and the characters were established well, so the scenes were easy to get into. This show is definitely going to be the audience pick for the Theatre Garage, so you have 2 more chances! GO!

As a 30 veteran of improvisation, I have both seen and done my share of great and god-awful improv. So... how did this show stack up? Once Upon A Chalkboard is SIMPLE BRILLIANCE. Take two phenomenally quick witted and flat out funny dudes, toss in a sure-fire winning ingredient (audience volunteers who can do no wrong), stir (trust me, these guys are never shaken) and there you go... an hour of delightful comedy that is never vulgar, but never so sappy sweet that you require insulin.

GO SEE THIS SHOW. I mean it, stop reading and go see this show!

Witches & Warlocks & Merman...OH MY!

By Robert Droddy / August 11, 2013
This user has reviewed 1 show

What may from the onset seem like a kitschy, improv show is, at its core, ANYTHING but and the reviews clearly speak for themselves! This highly original, innovative piece of theatre pairs two of the cities best comediennes, Tyler Michaels and Tod Petersen, doing what they do best…playing! While I marveled at Michael’s and Petersen’s ability to create quirky, unique characters complete with differing vocal and physical attributes, (I mean, can these boys voice a Saturday morning cartoon already?), what I truly appreciated was their skillfulness at balancing jokes targeted at the audience-created renderings all-the-while honoring these participant’s artistic contributions. It is indeed everything it’s CHALKED up to be, I promise!

Charming, funny, creative. We had planned on this one and were bringing a friend of my daughter's, only to find out just before heading over that she had a bit of a phobia of chalkboard squeaks. After hearing the description and reviews, she decided to give it a try and said that she only heard one bothersome squeak, near the beginning, and after that, no problems. (I think it was a combination of any squeaks being drowned out by laughter, and being distracted by the fun of the show.)

We laughed the entire show - was sad to see it come to an end. Tod and Tyler were amazing together and so quick to figure out what to say next. What a brilliant idea to draw the props on chalkboards - they didn't care that the drawings were "not so perfect" and that was half the fun. And allowing kids to participate was also a plus. I would definitely recommend it to young and old.

Chalk Dust Everywhere!!

This is a delightful show....and with improv you just never know what is going to happen....and after about 30 minutes I wanted something more to happen. The performers are great and the concept was great....but, the scenes sort of felt like the same thing after a point...possibly expanding the context of the improved scenes beyond the fairy tales would help...add in sci-fi? fantasy?

If you have children....this is a wonderful show....and there is plenty of innuendo for the adults too.

Make sure you take in this quirky fun production.

Simply said, this show was innovative and captivating. The audience, at first, was apprehensive to participate, but after the first hand-picked set designed artists were picked everyone wanted their shot at drawing. The artists did a fantastic job at including all chalk-work in their plots and the audience was left questioning which direction the story would lead. Be ready to laugh. I'm excited for the next show to see what different story-lines will develop with help from the audience's involvement.

Imaginative, Engaging and Original

By Dan Beckmann / August 1, 2013
This user has reviewed 3 shows

Once Upon a Chalkboard is one of those rare shows that is to be enjoyed by all walks of life. Adults familiar with improvisational comedy (ala "Whose Line") will find a lot to love here, as well as those who have never seen an improv show in their life.

Tyler Michaels and Tod Petersen masterfully engage the audience in a method of on-the-fly storytelling that is influenced by the objects drawn by audience volunteers on a series of chalkboards both small and large, and driven by a medieval, Elizabethan or fantasy theme.

The scenes performed are long enough to establish a compelling pair of characters and interesting and evolving plot, but short enough that several stories can be told during the show.

A fantastic time; recommended to all.
