About Minnesota Fringe

There is one big thing that makes Fringe different from any other event in town: All the shows you'll see at Fringe were selected randomly by lottery.

Yep. That's right. Each year the lineup is crafted by placing numbered ping-pong balls into a bingo cage and drawing them out, one by one. From stage veterans to people who are brand new to theater, Minnesota Fringe is a forum for anyone with a story to tell. We also provide the necessary support to make producing a show as easy as possible, regardless of where you land on the artistic spectrum.

Anyone (yes, anyone) can apply to have a show in the festival. If you'd like to have a show in our next festival, applications will go live in November here on our website. Sign up for our newsletter to receive a reminder as well as information about other theater events happening around town.

The mission of the Minnesota Fringe is to promote creative freedom and diversity of artistic expression by linking adventurous artists with adventurous audiences. Thank you for joining in this adventure!

Showtimes

Shows start and end on time at Fringe. With 850 performances of 167 shows in just 11 days, we have to run a tight schedule to avoid descending into chaos. Performances are no more than 60 minutes long with a half hour between each show.

On weekdays shows begin at 5:30pm, 7pm, 8:30pm and 10pm. On weekends there are additional shows at 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm.

Late seating: There is NO LATE SEATING at Minnesota Fringe. In addition to keeping our schedule, late seating is a safety issue for artists and audiences.

Safety for artists: Some of our theaters require that patrons walk across parts of the stage to reach the seating area, and many of our production companies’ stage work encompasses entrances and exits from the house.

Safety for audiences: Entering a darkened theater, possibly for the first time, and trying to find open seats puts patrons and volunteers at unnecessary risk.

Fringe Central

Fringe Central, sponsored by Surly Brewing and hosted by Grumpy's Bar & Grill - Downtown, serves as the late-night watering hole for artists, staff, volunteers and audience members alike. Come in after a day full of shows to grab a beer and some bar food. Talk about what you loved and what you didn’t. Meet the artists behind the scenes and actors on the stage. Find out what you should see tomorrow or dream up your own idea for next year. You never know what will happen during Fringe, but dropping by Fringe Central gives you a serious head start.

What to Wear

Shorts and a t-shirt. Seriously. Also, a pair of comfy shoes will serve you well in case you have to wait in line. Pro tip: Most Fringe shows take place indoors in air-conditioned venues, so having a layer to throw on in case you get chilly is also advisable.

Choosing a Show

With 850 performances of 167 shows, it's scandalous to see just one. But how to choose the perfect lineup?

Search by genre: You can filter for genres when trying to decide what to see.

Talk to people: It only sounds scary. Just look for the folks in lanyards. Lanyards are worn by Fringe artists and there are at least a thousand of them dying to tell you about their show.

Read and write reviews: See what audiences are raving about on our audience review page, then return the favor and let others know what you thought.

Attend: Thanks to the new day pass system, attending Fringe is easier and cheaper than ever.

Volunteer: Our 400+ volunteers are near and dear to our hearts and make our festival go, so we shower them with lots of love and complimentary seats! Sign up for a shift now!

Socialize: Join us any night of the festival at our official hangout, Fringe Central sponsored by Surly Brewing and hosted by Grumpy's Bar & Grill - Downtown, for a beer, a burger and maybe even some late-night shenanigans.

Great first time Fringe appearance for this cast! The characters' personalities were an awesome mixture of serious, lazy, funny, laugh out loud hilarious, all of the way to very scary. The plot was so entertaining that time went by too fast! I absolutely loved the dancing!! The actual song selections were great - kept the spirit of the show flowing. Really enjoyed the punny t-shirts!! The end needed more actual closure for the audience but really was a great actual mystery that I didn't solve myself. Bravo!

Dancing and Murder mix

I really enjoyed this production. The storyline was somewhat predictable, murder in the house, I was truly surprised at the murderer. the female officer was direct yet understated and funny. The Costumes were fabulous, colorful, shiny, well constructed, loved the ever changing t-shirts. The music was great. The dancing was so much fun to watch. A must see.

This show covers all the aspects of Bollywood in less than an hour. Excellent acting by the entire crew along with lively and energetic dances makes this show a full blown Bollywood entertainer. The story is a well written comedy mystery with a totally unexpected twist at the end. Excellent direction, characterization and comic timing ensures that there is never a dull moment throughout the play. The dances are well choreographed and brilliantly executed by all the dancers.

Overall, this show is a perfect mix of everything Bollywood has to offer. A definite must watch!

Kudos to the entire team!

I thought the first portion started out a little slow, but I think it was necessary to set up the plot. It quickly began building momentum. The storyline was funny and had interesting twists. The dancing was awesome...looks very challenging and the cast did a great job. I liked the small details incorporated into the show, like Monty's repeatedly changing humorous T-shirts.

BollyFringe

by Tim Erickson on August 11, 2017

This was a fun show with a large and enthusiastic cast and crew. In comparison to other shows, neither the acting nor the story hold up with other shows I've seen this year. However, that is a high bar to cross.

I go to the Fringe to see a variety of productions and I love the fact that I was able to include a Bollywood style show in my mix this year and I had a good time.

The costumes and dancing were probably the highlight of the show - although I expected there to be more of a connection between the dance numbers and the story (but, maybe this is misconception about Bollywood style musicals).

Appreciated chatting with the cast member who reached out to audience members after the show for feedback. I look forward to next year.

A Bollywood Twistery is such a fun performance. The actors do a great job with funny dialogue, great costumes (watch the t-shirt), and a spooky ghostly cackle! Initially I thought the play is bit slow and loosing the pace. However it picked up at right moment and then its all about mystery and of course BOLLYWOOD MASALA with twistery..... I really enjoyed it. Peppy songs, dances, acting and script asked you to stick to the chair and enjoy it. Special mentioned of one character - GHOST, It really takes a lot of guts to walked into the auditorium through viewers and do complete justice to the demand of the script.

Absolutely loved it!

by Winston Rosario on August 10, 2017

I had no idea what to expect, but reading the other reviews, I was curious to see my first Bollywood live show. I've seen better Bollywood dances but the acting was spot on. The robber's t-shirts were crazy funny like other reviews have suggested. Absolutely loved his acting, expressions, especially during the dance. The officer was the second best even though I couldn't relate to her attitude as a cop. Maybe Indian cops are diff. The dances costumes were colorful and shiny and the effort was good although the dances themselves could be tighter. I couldn't relate to some of the slapstick comedy(aiyee) but enjoyed the show overall. I highly recommend this show if you like the 'Larger than life' Bollywood extravaganza.

Meh...

by Aurora Strike on August 9, 2017
This user has reviewed 4 shows

I wasn't overly impressed with the show. There were some great comedic moments (Some way overplayed to the point they weren't funny anymore - "AIYEEE") and the officer had a fabulous performance. The music was alright but basically covered all of the same topics. I get Bollywood has a lot to do with love but their script could have lent itself well to many other Bollywood songs. Their choreography (while performed well) was a bit predictable with the formation. It seemed like each song had a cookie cutter recipe for the formations. It would have been fun to see them move around the stage more. The script was fun and with a bit more work could be really great. Lastly, there were lots of black outs that really stopped the show.

Awesome Entertainment!!!

by Sumit Mundhra on August 9, 2017

Perfect combination of a good story, colorful choreography, and superb actors that kept me engaged throughout. It is hard to find shows truly aligned with their storyline but Bollywood Twistery beat my expectations. I laughed at the comedy, tapped my foot along to the beats of Bollywood, and was shocked at the unexpected ‘Twist’. My 10 year old son also enjoyed the show. His favorite dance was the song with three girls and a surprise factor – very well done!

A Cheery Murder Mystery

by Catherine Brennan on August 9, 2017
This user has reviewed 3 shows

This theatrical equivalent of a cozy murder mystery receives a breathless, energetic performance by a young cast. There are wonderful, broad dramatic and comic elements, including costuming. The dancers sparkle and shimmer with rhythmic energy. There is also a contrasting atmospheric scene that is surprisingly effective in this cheery musical environment. And there is romance afoot for pretty much everyone. A Bollywood Twistery delivers on the fun.

The dances are energetic, costumes colorful and the passion/expressions true blue bollywood style. Don't miss it!

As a 12 year old it's hard to go somewhere and stay entertained for longer than 5 minutes, this play kept me excited and wanting to know more. I feel that family performances are the best performances because you can all have a good laugh and you don't have to hire a babysitter. The dancing was something I had never seen before!! I am a dancer and was inspired by what I saw onstage it was flawless and energetic, in my opinion it had the perfect balance of dancing and acting, I would for sure go again.

This hourlong musical delivers bushels of laughs, a genuine thrilling kick, brilliant dancing and a clever dramatization. The magnificent music, sounding from the beginning, penetrates the musical, adding depth to images of characters. Every actor in the play played their roles perfectly keeping the audience guessing the suspense.
I would like to give a special shout out to the back stage helpers and the light technicians. They were on their toes to alter the set as required.
I wish them all the best for their future endeavors.

Fun Bollywood Style Mystery Comedy

by MJ N Ada on August 7, 2017

If you watch Bollywood movies you know the movies are almost all romantic musicals, with characters randomly breaking out into song and dance numbers while falling for each other. Expect the same with the Twistery. Nicely choreographed dance routines mix through a script full of hilarious characters as the mystery unfolds. My 4 year old wanted to see it twice!

I don't have any knowledge of Bollywood tropes, so filter my review through that lens! I thoroughly enjoyed this campy, glitzy show. Highlights included the dance costumes, Rocky the Robber's posture and gait, and Monty's tshirt collection. Fun (plus one slightly spooky) dance numbers! A note: the spooky bits scared the pants off my five-year-old (who's definitely on the sensitive side) so consider your kiddos' tolerance before ignoring the suggested viewing ages!

I didn't get into the show I wanted to see and figured that Bollywood is always fun. This group has some good dance talent, but the show had some trouble with the flow, the script wasn't great, and Bollywood is energized by a stage full of dancers, which this lacked. Add a lot more dancers and tighten up the performance and it will be okay.

The Bollywood shows have become a mainstay of the Fringe. This year's staging is by Harmonious Music - a new group (the Bollywood Dance Scene group of years past is included a Patrick's Cabaret production at Intermedia this year). As usual, the dancing is the standout. The story is a minor element and not tied as well to the dancing as it might be. It's a fun show and the creative dancing makes it enjoyable.
