About Minnesota Fringe

There is one big thing that makes Fringe different from any other event in town: All the shows you'll see at Fringe were selected randomly by lottery.

Yep. That's right. Each year the lineup is crafted by placing numbered ping-pong balls into a bingo cage and drawing them out, one by one. From stage veterans to people who are brand new to theater, Minnesota Fringe is a forum for anyone with a story to tell. We also provide the necessary support to make producing a show as easy as possible, regardless of where you land on the artistic spectrum.

Anyone (yes, anyone) can apply to have a show in the festival. If you'd like to have a show in our next festival, applications will go live in November here on our website. Sign up for our newsletter to receive a reminder as well as information about other theater events happening around town.

The mission of the Minnesota Fringe is to promote creative freedom and diversity of artistic expression by linking adventurous artists with adventurous audiences. Thank you for joining in this adventure!

Showtimes

Shows start and end on time at Fringe. With 850 performances of 167 shows in just 11 days, we have to run a tight schedule to avoid descending into chaos. Performances are no more than 60 minutes long with a half hour between each show.

On weekdays shows begin at 5:30pm, 7pm, 8:30pm and 10pm. On weekends there are additional shows at 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm.

Late seating: There is NO LATE SEATING at Minnesota Fringe. In addition to keeping our schedule, late seating is a safety issue for artists and audiences.

Safety for artists: Some of our theaters require that patrons walk across parts of the stage to reach the seating area, and many of our production companies’ stage work encompasses entrances and exits from the house.

Safety for audiences: Entering a darkened theater, possibly for the first time, and trying to find open seats puts patrons and volunteers at unnecessary risk.

Fringe Central

Fringe Central, sponsored by Surly Brewing and hosted by Grumpy's Bar & Grill - Downtown, serves as the late-night watering hole for artists, staff, volunteers and audience members alike. Come in after a day full of shows to grab a beer and some bar food. Talk about what you loved and what you didn’t. Meet the artists behind the scenes and actors on the stage. Find out what you should see tomorrow or dream up your own idea for next year. You never know what will happen during Fringe, but dropping by Fringe Central gives you a serious head start.

What to Wear

Shorts and a t-shirt. Seriously. Also, a pair of comfy shoes will serve you well in case you have to wait in line. Pro tip: Most Fringe shows take place indoors in air-conditioned venues, so having a layer to throw on in case you get chilly is also advisable.

Choosing a Show

With 850 performances of 167 shows, it's scandalous to see just one. But how to choose the perfect lineup?

Search by genre: You can filter for genres when trying to decide what to see.

Talk to people: It only sounds scary. Just look for the folks in lanyards. Lanyards are worn by Fringe artists and there are at least a thousand of them dying to tell you about their show.

Read and write reviews: See what audiences are raving about on our audience review page, then return the favor and let others know what you thought.

Attend: Thanks to the new day pass system, attending Fringe is easier and cheaper than ever.

Volunteer: Our 400+ volunteers are near and dear to our hearts and make our festival go, so we shower them with lots of love and complimentary seats! Sign up for a shift now!

Socialize: Join us any night of the festival at our official hangout, Fringe Central sponsored by Surly Brewing and hosted by Grumpy's Bar & Grill - Downtown, for a beer, a burger and maybe even some late-night shenanigans.

A Contrived Situtation

by Adam Boutz on August 15, 2017
This user has reviewed 56 shows

A raunchy comedy about stupid teenagers making stupid decisions. Acting was terrific, and by far the best part. The story was also quite funny, but I found most of the characters unlikable. Deep moral questions are handled with slapstick comedy, but the answers try to strike a middle ground between the two and don't really succeed.

Loved it!

Confess that I attended this by accident -- don't ask -- and ended up loving it. Cast was great, the story was believable, the writing was fast-paced and "funnily serious," if that's a thing, and the whole production was enjoyable. Am looking forward to seeing some of these cast members in other productions around town. While a titch millennial, even us old farts can relate.

Picks up steam

by Jon Golden on August 11, 2017
This user has reviewed 16 shows

3.5 stars. I was expecting more of an adventure journey with hijinks from this show but it's more of a bedroom(s) comedy. Starts out kinda slow but picks up steam as it goes along, Teddy Larsen steals the show with the most complete character. The others are good as well but Teddy is the standout. Script could maybe use one more draft to flesh out all ideas and characters.

Clever writing, quick pace, brutally funny, great stage fighting, and nonstop entertainment. I wasn't bored for a second! Plan B had me and my friends in tears from laughing so hard! Very believable and quality acting from the fantastic actors from Chicago. You're not going to want to miss this show!

Raunchy, but in a good way

by Jake Garhofer on August 10, 2017
This user has reviewed 6 shows

As a disclaimer this show is, like the title says, raunchy and not for everyone. But this show is so freaking funny. The show is brilliantly written, my stomach hurt from laughing so much, the space on the stage was so smartly worked. while the storyline had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. Teddy Larsen did something right with this show, and was also a standout actor in this performance, a few more who deserve honorable mentions include Audrey, Ali, and Meghan. Honestly if this show isn't on your list put in on there, because you won't regret seeing it.

EASY TO COMPREHEND AND FUN

The beginning felt a little slow but the show only got better from there. It was funny, raw, and truly enjoyable to watch. The script was easy to follow and the actors were natural and down-to-earth. LOVED it.

Complete and Chaotic Hilarity

by Jayde Al-Angary on August 9, 2017
This user has reviewed 1 show

With fantastic writing of Teddy Larsen and phenomenal direction of Kyle Schwartz, Plan B is a hysterical, fast-paced, important, and all-around enjoyable production. It has been a good while since I laughed so much in the theatre. And while it is absolutely and undeniably hilarious, the relatable content (while sometimes cringe-worthy) and the dedication and talent of all those involved with the show brought it to a whole new level of awesome. You will be on the edge of your seat for the entire hour you are in this theatre. GO SEE THIS SHOW!

Plan B for a good time!

by Craig Hennen on August 9, 2017
This user has reviewed 1 show

A lively, blunt and funny play about the clash between traditional religiousness and youthful sex drive. Set in the home of the daughter/sister/girlfriend in a small conservative town in Arizona in 2007, the plot follows two mismatched teenage couples who get in and out and back into mischief. The newly written script is crisp and played enthusiastically and with comedic physicality by the adorable young seven-person ensemble. A very fun hour of theater!

Plan B gets an A

by Monica Gronert on August 8, 2017
This user has reviewed 2 shows

An engaging, funny and well produced comedy that harnesses the emotional journey of teens as they grapple with the ramifications of intimacy. John Drea gives a heartfelt performance with counterpart Audrey Anderson who flawlessly profiles a 17 year old girl as she tries to manage intimate relations and a religious family. Teddy Larsen who wrote the play, provides an anchor of steady fun, inserting clever and humorous comments throughout the show. Zach Koptik, Meghan Maddigan, Jimmy Mann and Ali Detviler are strong supporting cast members that keep the show energized. Jimmy Mann's role as a video game presents an interesting creative twist with well timed exclamations that bridges real and imaginary worlds. A must see! Great acting!

I thought Plan B was hilarious! Very well written. Additionally, I thought the pacing of the play really helped emphasize the anxiety of the characters situation. The writer and the actors were able to take a serious topic and make it funny. If you like laughing you should definitely go!

Hilarious! The only improvement on the show would have been to hand out Plan B to the audience as door prizes.

This show captures the anxiety all young people have about sex as well as some of the misinformation that exists. It also demonstrates the risks of restricting access to safe contraception.

Highly recommended! I was feeling the anxiety along with the actors. The brawls were well staged and hilarious. Halo added
An extra layer of comedy with (his?) spontaneous comments.

A Knee Slapper To Say The Least

by Maddie Detviler on August 8, 2017

The entire cast of characters did a tremendous job of taking a very unnerving situation and spicing it up with hilarious banter and emotion to not only make this show laugh-out-loud funny, but also a relatively relatable scenario. Each scene left me on the edge of my seat, excited for more and laughing my a$$ off.

Comically Raunchy and Poignant

by Andrew Maddigan on August 8, 2017
This user has reviewed 1 show

Excellently acted and directed, Plan B is the kind of show that should be seen at Fringe: thought-provoking, hilariously entertaining, and executed with a tight professional efficiency. Plan B adheres to the classic farce structure, with lies, half-truths, and misinformation making up the bulk of the entertainment for the audience, and with truth leading to moments of pure onstage insanity (and superbly staged brawls).
But Plan B differentiates itself through its plot and setting. Watching these teen characters justify “sins” one moment and condemn them the next, while pursuing a contraceptive in rural Arizona that none of them seem to fully understand, elevates this show and adds a wonderful layer of complexity for the audience. See it!

You really don't want to miss this show!

by taylor lach on August 7, 2017
This user has reviewed 1 show

On the surface, Plan B is a raucous, beautifully orchestrated, almost farcical comedy about teens in small-town Arizona. And that’s just on the surface! Once you’re finished wiping the laughter tears from your eyes, you see that Teddy Larsen also created a thoughtful commentary on the impossibility of gracefully navigating adolescence. In poignant moments nestled between body slams and video games, Plan B pulls viewers back in, giving them a reason to really care about these characters and their struggles. I highly recommend attending this show; the casting, writing, and directing are all an absolute treat!

Very fun, but could be tightened

by Jacob Hooper on August 7, 2017
This user has reviewed 1 show

This was a really enjoyable experience. Very funny show with excellent performances from the whole cast, especially from the actor playing the brother who was simply a riot the entire show. My only real critique is the script could use an editor. It runs off on two or three odd tangents that either kill the pace of the show or feel really out of place. All in all, very worth seeing if you want to watch an absolutely hilarious, though all-too-real, situation.

A Serious Topic Delivered With Humor

by Jennifer de Fiebre on August 7, 2017
This user has reviewed 14 shows

The "realness" of the dialog is what struck me the most in this show. There were cringe-worthy lines, but not because they were unrealistic, instead because you realize that kids are really having conversations like this. Considering the gravity of the topic, I liked the way they made sure there was plenty of humor to balance out the show.

Loved the production, but not the play.

by Christopher Allen on August 7, 2017
This user has reviewed 24 shows

It's always nice to see something in Fringe that feels like it could be a full production. It had a functional set, was very well-rehearsed, and the cast was talented. The script, however, was hit and miss. Concerning religion versus sexuality, especially in the world of teenage romance, it did a stellar job. But, there were some plot developments that felt a little muddy and some other social issues that were brought up and then quickly under the rug, especially one gigantic one right near the end. I was always engaged, though, and I laughed a good deal. I'd recommend it.

These guys are my friends, so I would have no problem telling you if they had a shitty show. The script is funny as hell, great performnces by the cast, and a raucous time overall. This show will have you slapping your knee one moment and cringing (in a good way) the next. An ethnography about sex in 2007 conservative Arizona.

Funny and Honest

This was an entertaining look at how teenagers might deal with a possible pregnancy in the modern era. The teens made many choices that older adults (like me...) find maddeningly stupid, but that's how many teenagers really are. Kudos to this group for a well acted play on a tough subject - and making it funny and accessible, too.

Plan B depicts high school and adolescence with an authenticity I rarely see in theatre. The characters are treated with compassion by the playwright, director, and actors. More than just funny, Plan B is a wholly candid portrayal of an all too common adolescent experience.

Plan B is a fantastic show. A frank and thoughtful depiction of teenage sexuality, bursting with moments of absolute hilarity. The script is witty and the cast is wonderful to watch, balancing moments of desperation and sincerity with a manic energy that leaves you gasping for breath. I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard at live theater.

If you want something honest, something irreverent, something gut-bust flat-out enjoyable, go see Plan B. And even if you don't, go anyway, because by the end of the night I promise you'll be glad you did.

This was hilarious. The plot was well constructed with characters that were fit the classic playwrights rules. Nice work. The acting was strong, movtivated, and focused. I enjoyed this. Nice My concern was the diction of the actors and blocking issues from where I was seated. This show is in my fringe plan A. If you are a conservative, however, this show is not for you. Overall, nice work.

Plan B: Your Next Fringe Stop

Plan B's company of actors bravely tackle themes of the transition to adulthood and the taboo behind sexuality in this fast-paced, wild comedy. By using humor to drive the plot along, poignant comments on society are able to manifest in an authentic way. The juxtaposition of honest humor and unfortunate realities allow for a very enjoyable, thought-provoking piece. Innovatively created and smartly performed, this is a show you will not want to miss.
