About Minnesota Fringe

There is one big thing that makes Fringe different from any other event in town: All the shows you'll see at Fringe were selected randomly.

Yep. That's right. Each year we select our lineup by placing numbered ping-pong balls into a bingo cage and pulling them out, one by one. From stage veterans to people who are brand new to theater, Minnesota Fringe is a forum for anyone with a story to tell and provides the support to make producing a show as easy as possible.

Anyone (yes, anyone) can apply to have a show in the festival. If you'd like to have a show in the 2017 festival, applications will go live in November here on our website.

Minnesota Fringe is one of many fringe festivals across the nation and around the world. Check the rest of 'em out here.

The mission of the Minnesota Fringe is to promote freedom and diversity of artistic expression by linking adventurous artists with adventurous audiences.

Showtimes

Shows start and end on time at the Fringe. With 880 performances of 169 shows in just 11 days, we're on a tight schedule. Shows are no more than 60 minutes long with a half hour between each show. On weekdays shows begin at 5:30pm, 7pm, 8:30pm and 10pm. On the weekends there are additional shows at 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm.

Late seating: There is NO LATE SEATING at Minnesota Fringe. Here's why. Beyond keeping the festival running on schedule, our primary reason for no late seating is safety.

Safety for people on stage: Some of our theaters require that patrons walk across parts of the stage to reach the seating area, and many of our production companies’ stage work encompasses entrances and exits from the house.

Safety for our patrons: Entering a darkened theater (and possibly the first time a patron has been in a particular space) and trying to find open seats is not only dangerous for the late patron but also for our volunteers and any seated patrons as well.

Fringe Central

Fringe Central, sponsored by Surly Brewing and hosted by Republic, serves as the late-night watering hole for artists, staff, volunteers and audience members alike. Come in after a day full of shows to grab a beer (or two) and talk. Talk about what you loved. Talk about what you didn’t. Meet the artists behind the shows and find out what you should see tomorrow. You never know what will happen at the Fringe, but dropping by Central gives you a serious head start.

characters_what_to_wear

What to Wear

Shorts and a t-shirt. Seriously. Also, a pair of comfy shoes will serve you well in case you have to wait in line. Pro tip: Most Fringe shows take place indoors in air-conditioned venues, so having a layer to throw on in case you get chilly is also advisable.

characters_choosing

Choosing a Show

With 169 shows to choose from, it's scandalous to see just one. But how to choose your perfect lineup?

Search by genre: You can filter for genres when you're trying to decide what to see.

Talk to people: It only sounds scary. Just look for the folks in lanyards. Pro tip: Lanyards indicate Fringe artists - they'll be glad to tell you about their show.

Read and write reviews: See what audiences are raving about on our audience review page, then return the favor and let others know what you thought.

Get Involved

Fringe isn't just a festival - it's a community, and it couldn't exist without people like you.

Volunteer: Our 400+ volunteers are near and dear to our hearts and make our festival go, so we shower them with lots of love and complimentary seats! Sign up for a shift now!

Be social: Join us any night of the festival at our official hangout, Fringe Central sponsored by Surly Brewing and hosted by Republic, for a beer, a burger and maybe even some late-night shenanigans.

Create your own show: Applications for the 2017 festival will go live mid-November on this website. The Fringe is open to everyone, all shows are selected by lottery, and you don't even need to have a show ready when you apply.

Box Office Info

Reservations are optional and may be bought in advance through the Fringe website. Advance sales stop at 1 pm on weekdays and 10 am on weekends. A reservation guarantees you a seat for the show. You must also be wearing a day pass wristband to get in. Day pass wristbands can be purchased at any Fringe venue 30 minutes prior to show time, as well as online with a reservation.

Purchases made in advance allow you to bypass the venue box office completely. Check in with a Fringe volunteer at the house door to pick up your reservation starting 30 minutes before show time. Once reservations are purchased, they are guaranteed and will NOT be resold.

Payment methods: Fringe accepts cash, all major credit cards and checks made out to "Minnesota Fringe Festival."

Kids at Fringe: There is a recommended minimum age for each (see individual show pages on our website). It is up to the parent/guardian to make the final decision; Fringe makes no guarantees about content.

Day pass wristbands: ALL patrons must have a wristband to see a show. Your wristband serves as your pass to any show in the festival on a given day. Wristbands are $16 on weekdays; $22 on weekends.

Wristbands for kids 12 and under will be available in the venues during the festival for $5 every day.

Late seating: Nope.

Refunds: Nuh uh.

Great Community Performance

by Paul W. on August 21, 2016
This user has reviewed 22 shows

I was impressed with the number of dancers they included. The community effort and involvement was pleasing to witness. My first Bollywood play, I enjoyed the dancing and music. They were able to tackle a serious topic, with bits of sillyness, seriousness, comedy and love. Bravo!!!

It is what it is, and that's ok

by Adam Boutz on August 17, 2016

Three years of Bollywood shows and this has been the best by far. True, the plot was still made out of cardboard, the characters are all stereotypes, and the acting is over-the-top. This show pretty much nails the Bollywood genre. If it were better it would not be as authentic. The formula is clearly working, so I doubt we're going to see anything revolutionary anytime soon. And, in its defense, the show was quite self-aware of what it was.

What a wonderful show! I hadn't originally planned to see this show but all the reviews were great and so many Fringe patrons and volunteers were talking about it so I had to see it. I loved it! The dancing was great, costumes beautiful, the story was funny yet meaningful and impactful. Great show - go see the Encore!

Inside and outside

by Gerald Timm on August 12, 2016
This user has reviewed 1 show

The show itself was energetic and uplifting. The choreography was good but got confused by the number of different performers required. Could this have been done with less than a dozen or so?
2.On the outside of the theater were some of the most blatant line crashers I've recently witnessed. What started as a couple of people in front of me suddenly morphed into ten. Not a fault of the show except one example I witnessed was when on of the performers invited a couple of people he knew to join the growing number of line crashers in front of me. Can this situation be easily dealt with? I am very annoyed when I have been waiting in line for 20 mins or more, only to have latecomers have their choice of better seats.

Fringe's most human show

by David Ward on August 11, 2016
This user has reviewed 3 shows

Want an antidote to this years screeching racial/political discord? Bezubaan: The Voiceless gives you a 50 min. rest and celebrates the best that human diversity has to offer. With an appealing (and HUGE) cast, and the focus mostly on dance, BDS guides you through the perils all races can feel when confronted with the need to include the "other" into family relationships. Yes, the acting and plot are thin, but,as explained by the 2 charming narrators, that too, is pure Bollywood. If I had to single out only one performance of the 90 person cast I would commend Sophie Gori, who's acting and dancing are a cut above and who's stunning beauty makes for a marvelous stage presence. See this to regain your pride in being part of the human family.

by Sridhar Koneru on August 11, 2016

Great Humor, Colorful and energetic dances and a wonderful message to go with it. Enjoyed the show as much if not more as their last year's production. How did they manage to fit so many dancers on such a small stage and still look so wonderful. The actors and the narrators did a great job humoring the audience while the dancers made you want to get up on your feet and dance with them. All in all a great entertainment along with a great message for the current times. Go watch it if you have not already done so.

See it for the dancing

by Shawna Bradt on August 11, 2016
This user has reviewed 10 shows

So easy to give this show 5 stars for dancing and costumes. The acting though is sitting closer to 2.5/3 unfortunately. I would have preferred they cut the lip syncing - I mean, it's so obvious they are not singing and the actors are only partially committed to lip syncing anyway. Plus your costumes make it clear who the character focus is in each song. You guys do a great job without the lip syncing and the "meh" execution takes away from your show's strengths.

Beautiful. Colorful. Engaging. Mesmerizing. Fun. Energetic. Thoughtful. These are the first few words that come to mind after watching the show.

Pure coincidence brought me to Minneapolis this week and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this.

5 stars to the script, catchy narration, dance choreography, song selection and of course the actors.

I got 2 words for y'all - WATCH IT !!!

Delightful and heart-warming! The show is 75% dancing and the dancing is 100% enjoyable. Text was sweet and well-meaning with a message, delivered by mostly untrained actors that was sometimes uncomfortable.

by Nanette Stearns on August 10, 2016

The Bollywood dance company presents a third successful show (after Hi, Hello Namaste and Spicy Masala Chai). Come for the dancing and the beautiful costumes and talented performers. Yes, the script is weak. Yes the message is a bit heavy handed and stereotyped at times. But you can't debate their heart and soul being poured into the performance. Glad to see this talented group back for a third time.

Wonderful show, and I'll be honest - it always gets me in the feels to have 90 (!) people on stage all super excited about the same thing, and a house of 450 all smiling and clapping along to the music. TC Bollywood did a great job prepping the line, encouraging us to not act like Minnesotans and feel comfortable dancing, hooting, and hollering to feed their energy. :)

AMAZING!! MUST WATCH!! High energy, great music, fantastic dances, touching message. I was dancing in my seat the whole time!! The story is relevant, they packed in a great message with a well-woven story in exactly an hour. Kudos to the cast of 90+ from all age groups. The hard work that went into the making of this show was evident in all the details and the appreciation of that hardwork was evident in the standing ovation at the end :)

Glorious!

by Michael Merriam on August 8, 2016
This user has reviewed 9 shows

With beautiful costumes, expert dancing, and likable actors, the only caveat is the the show's message of tolerance and understanding gets a little heavy-handed at moments. This can be forgiven. The pure joy the dancers and actor perform with more than make up for that little quibble.

Confession: My wife wanted to see this, and I was being a good sport. ("Bollywood? Really?" secret eye roll.) But WOW! This show was FABULOUS - so much fun, so joyous, the costumes, choreography, the funny, self-deprecating narration, and the surprisingly moving and heart-felt theme. I am a convert. If this the was only show I saw for Fringe, it would still be money well-spent. BRAVO.

Colorful, vibrant and heart pounding amazing music and dance. Very well done yet again! Great show with a very sensitive topic depicted very well with great narration and amazing dances (kids and adults alike!)! Pay attention to the narrators and their one-liners(funny!!). Upbeat music, bright colors, energetic dancing, and a timely story. Bollywood Dance Scene does it again! The narrators do a great job of taking the ridiculousness of Bollywood and drawing connections to the ridiculousness of real life. The diverse cast, although not professional dancers, is clearly having a blast, and the audience is too!

There's a reason they fill huge theatres over and over. Bollywood is over the top and the Bollywood Dance Scene is so full of high energy I was bouncing in my seat for most of an hour. The narrators were witty and sometimes teasing. Our family saw this and are still quoting lines from the show. A huge uplift in today's strange and sometimes hateful times.

The R+J we need, but do not Deserve

by S. Coleman on August 7, 2016
This user has reviewed 15 shows

I am breaking my tradition of not giving shows that don't need it reviews, but any show that makes me cry multiple times deserves five stars.

This is my first blush with this company, so I walked in of course expecting fantastic dancing, but the star here may be the story. A story about breaking down barriers of hate that could not be told at a more needed time, by a brave group of people.

The Fringe is really lucky to host such a generous company. Thank you, I'm so glad my partner went on a whim. Best Fringe decision yet.

Fun First Experience

by Claire Avitabile on August 7, 2016

This was my first exposure to Bollywood, and I was definitely entertained for most of the hour. As a producer, I give major props to the folks behind this enormous show - with over 50 performers involved (whew!). The acting wasn't the greatest, and the non-dance scenes could pick up the pace a bit, but this show was fun and full of color and energy.

Bollywood Spectacular

by Carol Rudie on August 7, 2016
This user has reviewed 7 shows

What a lively visual romp through a thin romantic story that is Bollywood! Dancing, music, and the wild array of costumes make this a visual spectacle that invites audience participation. What was a bit disappointing was the tacking on of a moral that is far more layered than the genre really permits. The result was a moralism that forced a complex issue to be resolved in a trivializing way. That said, I left with a delight in the exposure to the immigrant Hindi experience--an experience that relates to all immigrants, including those in my family and networks. Occasionally, I wished for earplugs against some of the high-pitched and loud soundtracks.

Serendipity

by Rajib Bahar on August 7, 2016
This user has reviewed 6 shows

In my humble opinion, they were brave about taking on a sensitive topic in current politics & did a masterful job on social commentary. It may challenge our perception of reality in a good way. But, I digress. I loved their dances, colorful dresses, contagious energy, & pretty much everything I forgot to list. You'll get a memorable view of all of the dances if you're in front row center. During one dance sequence, an ear-ring flew off to the left side of the stage. An audience member reacted quickly and removed that object. Kudos to that gentleman for preventing injury & Bollywood Dance Scene for a good performance!!! I believe they are engaging social media with these tags... Clapping Hooping & Hollering Encouraged!

by August Berkshire on August 7, 2016
This user has reviewed 42 shows

When it comes to these Fringe Bollywood productions, we have come to expect lively music, colorful costumes, and intricate dancing - and this production was no exception in delivering that. The only question, then, is the story. In that regard, all we ask for is a wispy skeleton on which to hang the aforementioned spectacle. This year we get a morality play that, while bordering on being heavy-handed, delivers a well-timed message.

Strong and fun dance group

by LuAnn Monahan on August 7, 2016
This user has reviewed 15 shows

A great dance performance with a strong and always relevant storyline. The dancing is energetic and fun. This Bollywood-type group knows how to engage an audience – although I suspect the show I saw had more friends and family of the cast than anyone else. Regardless, it’s a great dance show to see. The “acting” was weak but I didn’t expect to see a play and I wasn’t disappointed with the dancing or the show overall. Get in early to see this one – I predict it will be the encore performance at Rarig on the last day.

A truly amazing show!!! Having watched Bezubaan twice already, the heart is still not satisfied fully and is craving for more....

Kudos to all the participants from the school going children to Appa, and everyone in between. There is a sense of energy right from the get go, and has managed to sustain that way through out the 60 minutes. This to me is a perfect blend of catchy and brilliantly choregraphed dance numbers, vibrant costumes representing various cultures, comedic, and yet delivering powerful message that's so apt for today. If only each of us makes an honest attempt to embrace the message this show projects, the world would be a far better place to live in.

If there are only a handful of shows that you can afford to watch, this belongs in that. However, if there is just one show you can watch, then, look no further.

The show is Bezubaan: The voiceless, but, you will be Speechless after watching...

Get ready to be blown away!!!! Without revealing the strong and well written story line I'll say that this show was brilliantly performed by a very talented group of actors ranging in ages from 10 to 60 yrs. The show is in the style of a typical Bollywood movie but for those who have not seen one, don't worry - the narrators will explain it along the way!! There are Indian dances from every part of the subcontinent which are performed with the expression and precision of a professional dance company. The show was humorous, tender and dynamic! It will have you on the edge of your seat for the full 60 minutes. I would go see every show if I could!!! Well done team Bezubaan!!!!!

At times the dance is so thrilling it lifts you out of your seat and into the very soul of India. I didn't think i would be moved to tears but at one point, felt so emotional. The beauty of the women, the humor of the story, the lovely elegant dance.....its was simply an amazing experience. I loved it and highly highly recommend this play!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With a hint of cinnamon

Extraordinary. One of the best shows I’ve seen in any Fringe. A talented set of dancers present a complex story without subtlety: The hate, the love, the heartache and the exuberance, all flow from a natural and all-too-common story of love gone wrong. The Bollywood dancers are great. The music is great. The actors are great. The narrator balances exposition and self-deprecation while moving the plot along. And it’s not an easy plot, with multiple overlapping flashbacks. The past illuminates the present. A Minnesota story, with roots in India. I’ll say it again: Extraordinary.

My Favorite Mistake

This was my first Fringe Festival and I took my 8 year old daughter along for the ride. We meant to see a different "kids" show. 5 minutes in I realized we were in the wrong theater and it didn't matter. We were grinning from ear to ear the entire show. Great costumes, music, story and characters. We didn't want it to end. There was such a huge amount of energy and joy on the stage, as well as cast members!! They seamlessly choreographed an entire community on stage scene after scene. How they all fit backstage is beyond me! The characters were fun, funny and they even tackled some social issues in a way that made you feel hopeful for our society. This was the best oops I have made in a while. So glad I failed my way into the wrong theater!

They did it again! If you're looking for a high-energy show that will put a smile on your face and a spring in your step, you can't miss this latest production by The Bollywood Dance Scene Twin Cities group! The music selection is spot on, the choreography is professional grade, the dancing is flawless, and the story is oh so Bollywood! What's not to like. Can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves next year!!

Bollywood Dance Scene never fails to impress its audience! Bezubaan:The Voiceless is full of enthralling dance performances... The energy on the stage make you wanna dance and the projection of Actors is spectacular.. You feel engaged for the entire 60 minues. The hard work of this diverse cast and crew comes out beautifully on stage to create a breathtaking experience. The costumes are vibrant and makes the dances look majestic.. I love the expressions of the dancers and how they make you feel a part of their show! Amazing work by writers, directors and all performers. Special shoutout to the song that is played during the seating which I've heard has been composed and recorded by the Bollywood Dance Scene Team itself. A must watch show!!

This is always a group to look forward to! Colorful, fun, funny, this time a great message, and the best of Bollywood on stage. The costumes alone are fabulous, but so is the music, dance and energy of this huge ensemble. Just loved it. By the end of the week, if not before, this show will be sold out, for good reason. They've convinced me to go take Bollywood dance lessons at Tapestry Folk Dance collective.

Amazing and inspiring theater

Having never seen live Bollywood, I had some idea of what to expect. I was blown away. This was live theater at its best - timely, yet classic; invigorating, but also thoughtful; audience-engaging and professionally produced. This alone was worth a weekend day pass cost. A must-see!

This group knows how to put on a show! Spectacular dancing, choreography and costumes! Narrators moved story along with humor and grace. Key players are well cast and many show real talent. Only wish the main message had emerged more naturally from the story. For a moment, I felt like I was being lectured. Overall, however, a fantastic show. Recommend!

Huge, youthful, multi-racial cast of dancers. Exquisite costumes. Witty MCs. They hit you over the head with the message, but I didn't go to see a Bollywood musical for a message, and it is particularly timely.

Charming

This user has reviewed 14 shows

I was utterly charmed by the show and the flood of energy and charisma on stage. The choreography was stellar and the wonderful costumes added to the enchanting spectacle. However, when the plot dipped into deeper issues, the charm dissolved into the drudgery of watching an after school special where important and complex problems are too easily resolved. Enough with the lecturing, bring back the entertainment that was promised in the opening performances.

Fringe Lovers, you cannot afford to miss this show. There is so much to say what my wife and I, felt while watching the show. But it’s fair to say, no words can explain our feel. You just have to be there to experience it. It takes a team to be successful and yes, looks like they have an extraordinary team to present this incredible show. We know Bollywood Dance Scene as the #1 bestselling show in the last two fringe festivals. But this time, they will surely make you realize we ‘ALL ARE ONE’. Would highly recommend to be part of this cause. For those statistics lovers, no doubt in them beating their own past records spreading the most important message of our time. Energy, Color, Fun, Humor, Tears, Drama, Dance, Narration, you have it ALL!

If you're looking for lights, color, humor and drama, this is the show to watch. The multiple Bollywood dances to popular and catchy foot-tapping numbers will not leave you disappointed. While all actors and performers are amateur, their stage presence weaves in the story well. Must watch for a fun experience with a crucial social message.

Bollywood Dance Scene does it again!!! They tackled a tough topic with heart and foot tapping, exuberant music and dance!
I had heard that they have over 90 people of all ages in the cast this year and went in curiously skeptical on how they were going to make that work -- trust me when I say, they made it work alright with seamless transitions and fun segues! Also - without giving the plot away - the end message relevant and on point!
This is a clear labor of love and a definite must-see for Fringe-goers!!

Actually deserves 6 stars, at least

by Suzanne Sharrock on August 6, 2016
This user has reviewed 56 shows

This group manages, each year, to put on a glorious show of Bollywood dancing with a cute little plot. This year was even more impressive - terrific dancing, with a serious plot very appropriate to the political and social intolerance so much in view right now. But it's delivered with humor and light-heartedness as well as serious sentiment. Appropriate for everyone and given a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the performance, which does not happen all that often in a Fringe show.

This is truly a must watch show ! The script is cleverly crafted , it is well paced , funny and a has nice flow between dances and acting scenes, but more importantly it delivers a strong message which makes you think about the some of the issues that we face in our current social/political setup. At the end of the show I overheard a person saying "these are conversations that we need to be having" - which is the best compliment a show can get. This group is know for their energetic dances and amazing costumes, now we can add acting to that list. Reserve your tickets, they will be sold out, if you have seen their past two shows, this will beat them.

A cast of thousands (or at least fifty), costumes that make your eyes pop, dancing by young and old that lights up the stage and fills the room with energy and life. They also managed to weave an appropriate moral lesson about intolerance and prejudice that is worth hearing. Highly recommended.

Not only was the show stunning and filled with energy but it also had an amazing message that needs to be spread throughout the country right now. Voiceless. Beautiful. I was stunned by all of the lead actors and quite a few of the dancers. You may just find someone joining you for your Thursday lessons!

They used the space well and worked efficiently to make sure they could get everything done that they needed to. Even with the occasional slip ups that 1st performances have at fringe. Would highly recommend going!!

More information

Bollywood Dance Scene presents Bezubaan: The Voiceless, an original Bollywood dance dramedy exploring themes of immigration, integration, and identity. This show is presented in a warm and humorous family-fun style with dancers from 5 to 65 years young.

Meet Appa, father figure and long time Hindu Indian immigrant, as he struggles with change at the International Market he considers both his means of livelihood, and his sanctuary. He, his Desi family, and Minnesotan friends, must face a new addition to their community. There are plenty of challenges to go around - but how many chances at redemption does one bitter man get?

The ten dynamic dance scenes punctuate and illustrate the storytelling while maintaining the colorful spectacle the audience loved in 2015’s Spicy Masala Chai. Showcasing Bollywood, Kathak, Lavni, Maharashrian folk, Hip Hop and other traditional and contemporary dance styles, Bezubaan: The Voiceless makes a statement.
