Sometimes shows have a philosophical core - How much is an artist defined by their medium? But the origin of this show was simple: “Make a dance show with a cast full of writers.” CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

The creators say this show is appropriate for ages 12 and up.

Poetry In Motion?

The show was much better than I thought it would be - but then again I have very low expectations when it comes to writers and movement. Wendy is truly a miracle worker. Good dancing and humor but not quite a must-see.

Backwards and in Heels

They say Fred Astaire's partner, Ginger Rogers did all the same moves he did...just backwards and in heels. Kudos to Windy for choreographing these writers' inner Ginger. Though I wish there were some things I could unsee - PABL in belly dance drag will be seared in my memory long after I forget the names of my children - there was also the charming dance he did with Cole Sarar. All grace and smiles, with just a soupcon of angst-ridden mortality. My last show Iwith Cole was all verbal dance; it was lovely to see her in motion. Katherine , if I'd known you could do MN burlesque I wouldn't have needed the Happy Light the last 2 winters. Put some thumb tacks into the soles of Tim Uren's shoes, hand him a hat. It's enough Gene Kelly for me.

Such a great idea!

This is one of those brilliant ideas that makes you jealous you didn't think of it. As a lawyer who is inextricably enmeshed in words, I jump at any chance I get as a non-dancer to be in a dance show. So I was smitten by this show before I even entered the theatre. Wendy Bowlsby was a fabulous guide through her creation. I loved that though some of the pieces were comic dances, the fact that writers were dancing was never in Itself played for laughs. A beautiful look at the fluidity of artistic expression.

Dancing writers. Seriously.

Not one normally drawn to dance shows – I had to see this one. I’m a huge fan on Windy’s choreography and had to see what she could do with writers. The result: fully entertaining. The narratives on the process were well thought out and written to give some insight into the minds of these very talented writers. The dances felt very simple, but were definitely the right style for this cast. I especially enjoyed the Fathers/Sons performance as well as Stir Crazy. All-in-all, a very enjoyable performance.

I like people working outside their comfort zones and Wendy does a great job leading this group. I imagine it was hard to get the buy in, but with her love and passion for the work they shine.

This show knows exactly what it is: writers expressing themselves through movement. There is no pretense that these people could dance professionally, though some move quite well. There is, however, a lyrical honesty here that I haven't seen in some of the more "professional" dance shows. When these writers accepted this challenge they didn't just take it seriously, they took it to heart. This was a wonderful, warm, funny, touching hour that I wish had been recorded.

I'm neither a writer nor a dancer, but I wish I were. It is difficult to describe what a Fringe dance performance is going to be like, but this one created their own challenge of using writers to tell their stories with their movement rather than with words. An interesting idea and they nailed it. It was over much too quickly

So I assumed the high star counts on these reviews were all from performers from past plays written by this shows' cast. Obligatory nods, suped up by fringe fever. But no! This is actually truly charming. Our MC and choreographer is delightful and committed to bringing dance to the cerebral. Many of these writers had backgrounds in dance, but you had the sense of the rust being oiled to fine sheen. And some were just so darn plucky! 5 stars, earned.

The writers involved in this show are fringe veterans, and knowing some of their past material makes this show even more fun, but I don't think you have to know them to enjoy it. The premise is simple, and well-executed. Many of the dances tell stories, which I love. Katherine Glover's burlesque was hilarious. John Heimbuch's dance to his father (Tim Uren) was touching and beautiful. Throughout the show, Tim Uren was graceful & light on his feet - a pleasure to watch. Cole and phillip made an adorable couple. Some of the writers (Natalie & John) clearly have more dance experience than others, but the show as a whole is great fun and makes dancing accessible for anyone. (If they can do it, so can we!)

Clever premise pays off

This show is exactly what the summary says it is, and the result is wonderful. I suspect I would have gotten a bit more out of it if I knew the individual writers/dancers better, but it really didn't matter -- their personalities came across just fine. This could have been a collection of Fringe insider jokes and half-baked performances, but it was satisfying and entertaining on its own.

Writers expressing themselves through dance . The rehearsals must have been a riot. I did like several of the dances the car dance,going around in circles, father dance and the finale. but for the most part It was missing the gestalt The steps were there but not the dance. It was Fred Astaire's partner not Fred Astaire.

A fish out of water experience that delivers on many different levels. At times funny, awkward, endearing, and courageous these writers take to the stage in an attempt to convey through means somewhat foreign to them to convey their messages. The result is show that resonates with anyone who has dared to take a chance and try something different, nay-sayers be damned. Kudos to all involved, this show was a real treat.

I am pleased to know several members of the cast and to be able to witness them and the other authors in the cast present their dances in such an authentic and vulnerable way was touching, adorable, fun and heartfelt. Windy Bowlsby' s choreography and choices of music suited each dancer. The collaboration of all created a delightful words/dance exchange. This experiential process was inspiring.

There's always at least one show that makes me feel really good to be alive each Fringe and this show was that show for me. Everything clicked, most everything was fun even though the best dance, "Fathers / Sons", made me tear up a little.

The audience was jumping all over Jumping Jack Kerouac the other night. We all thought it was wonderful! Why? Because Windy is a talented eMCee, and apparently the perfect Fringe Festival choreographer; perfect for boisterous, plot-entangling, fun dances – even by those who seemingly shouldn’t be able to dance at all, like wimpy writers! Turns out they can, and it’s a glorious evening, complete with some pretty deep and entertaining transitional quotes from the audacious authors. A gotta see!

One of my dance teachers often says that technique is the servant of expression, and long after an audience forgets what you did, they'll remember how you made them feel. I've seen professional dance shows that left me feeling confused, annoyed, shut out. This show made me feel happy, amused, inspired, even moved to tears (twice!). If a dancer is a mirror for each audience member to see himself (as I've also been told by a dance teacher), these dancers succeed, because each piece is relatable. If you have a father, a friend, a creative endeavor; then this show will speak to you. It's a well-done commentary on art and life. How many things have you not undertaken, for fear that you aren't "good enough"? See this show, and be inspired to try!

Unexpectedly Great!

A bunch of Fringey writers in a dance show. It sounded like a nice light diversion, and turned out to be so much more. Sure there was some laughter and good times, but the movement with (mostly) non-dancers was surprisingly effective, and at times deeply powerful and poignant. Only one show left; don't miss out!

Clever concept remarkably well executed. The night I attended, there was a standing ovation from an almost full house. After seeing so many disappointing (and unnecessarily vulgar) Fringe shows last year, I backed off of attending this year, but shows like this one and have me enthused again.

The Feel Good Show of the Fringe

And I mean this in a good way, really. I walked out of this show feeling, well, good. Happy. What a cool creative concept - having writers write and then choreographing dances for the writers. We get to hear their words. Then we get to see them dance. And they're good! Good choices of music as well. I loved that these folks put themselves out there - we get to benefit from their fearlessness. Go see it.

I went to see this show just to see John Heimbuch dance, so I had low expectations (sorry, John). However, it was very entertaining, and the dance was actually pretty good. The choreography matched the writer/dancer's abilities, which made the dances better. Was it great modern dance art? No. Was it fun and interesting? Definitely yes. I was particularly moved by John's piece dedicated to his dad. AND, there's a big production number at the end.

This isn't a show that can lean on the technical ability of the performers. The dancers are (almost) totally without formal training. Therefore, it's more of an underdog show than an artistic exhibition. It helped that I knew some of the dancers. Seeing them out of their element was endearing. It also helped that they're all experienced performers. Their confidence carried them through rough patches. I was surprised how entertained I was in spite of their lack of dancing background.

Yes, and well! - at least with the right choreographer. Though I think we all knew Natalie Rae Wass could move already, Windy Bowlsby matches music and choreography with each writer/dancer perfectly, and the result is great, effortless-looking, fun performances from all. Just as interesting, or more, are the interweaving snippets from the performers and choreographer on their thoughts on the processes, similarities and differences, involved in writing and moving. Next Year: Can stage managers dance?

Windy makes (mostly) non dancer fringe writer-performers into really good dancers. Add that to their polished wit and theatricality and its a whole new dimension. Imagine Tim Uhren channeling Gene Kelly and Alfred Hitchcock at the same time! It happens here.

I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cat. The stories told through movement ranged from amusing to poignant to mildly erotic, and the final number had me wishing I could jump up on stage to join them!

I picked this show based on the premise and knowing a couple of the performers. I expected it to be interesting; i did not expect to cry from both the serious emotional impact and hilarity.

The dance pieces are charmingly strung together by choreographer Windy, who uses the writer/dancer's own words to illuminate the whys of the process and the performance.

Don't miss this show, I was absolutely stunned by how wonderful it was.

Choreographer Wendy Bowlsby take some of the best writers and poets in the Twin Cities and get them to dance onstage. While not the most technically proficient dancers, the performances are solid, heartfelt, tell interesting stories. Each dancer/writers does an excellent job of working within their abilities while being entertaining. I highly recommended this show!I

These writers, many of whom are my friends, are very talented. I knew that already. So it was a lovely surprise to discover that they all have yet another impressive and beautiful way to make art. They, under the guidance of creator/choreographer Windy Bowlsby, have created a show that is funny, touching and playful, with moments that will truly surprise you. Bring tissues. I'm not kidding. Jumpin' Jack Kerouac is fun, fresh, unique, and you will leave feeling grateful that you just spent an hour with these glorious people. You have soared far beyond the middle, my friends! You will recognize some or all of the faces in this show. They are not dancers. They do not claim to be dancers. But, that's the point. I believe Windy could whip anyone into shape given her excellent production of many other great Fringe shows. It's fun, it's cute, it's a little sweet, and it's worth a look. Katherine Glover's solo performance is worth the price of admission itself.

A Perfect Show

For a dance show, this is not the most complicated or most well executed show you'll see at the Fringe but that's not the point. This show is about taking artists out of their comfort zones and trying something new. Like watching Bambi take those first few steps (although our performers here are slightly more graceful), what we see onstage is raw and honest. It's people exploring and learning. Some of it is giddy, some of it is powerful and one dance nearly moved me to tears (Heimbuch and Uren's number). Coupled with Windy's deft narration of the dancers' thoughts about what they were getting into, this makes for a perfect Fringe show. I dare you to leave this show uninspired to try something new.

The premise makes you want to laugh when you think of people being out of their comfort zone, but then you go see the show and witness the hard work they put into it and realize they're actually good. Especially John Heimbuch who really got into it. Very energetic show with great choreography and humor.

What Fringe is For

I loved this show. It demonstrated what the Minnesota Fringe should be about - encouraging, showcasing and celebrating what the Minnesota theatre/dance/arts community does so well - innovate, collaborate and create, taking the normal apart and putting it back together in new and different ways. Writers dance, dancers write, and who knows what happens after that? The show was also entertaining, joyous, funny, moving and profound. If you see this show, you'll love it.

This is a great show. This is a show with a clear purpose executed beautifully by performers brave enough to be really honest in a new [to most of them] way, directed by a choreographer who used the writers' stories, personalities, and abilities to craft perfectly built numbers that range from whimsical to powerful to heart melting to heart breaking and back again. What makes the whole thing gel and flow so beautifully is the introductions that Windy does between the pieces. They endear the audience to the performers and introduce us to their process in a genuine and casual way that puts us instantly on their side; so if some of the steps are a bit out of sync the piece is that much more endearing. I highly recommend this show.

this is solid choreography and fine dance in this, what i found much more compelling was how the director/choreographer took writers out of their element and delved gently but poignantly into the psychology both of dance and writing.

it was fun to see staple fringe writers outside of their element, it was far more interesting to see aspects of their personalities set out by another rather than more a oft presented crafted self.

some of the men struggled with more than memorizing movement, others sprung vibrantly alive. varied base skills did not distract but improved the show.

Honest and charming!

I was reluctant to attend this show because I thought it might be a self-deprecating display and I would feel bad laughing at people who couldn't dance. This was not the case at all. Yes, there were some hilarious moments - but intentionally so. This show is successful because the dancers fully committed to the experience. And the choreographer's respect for her cast is obvious. And there is some very wonderful dancing! It just goes to show, when a group of creative and thoughtful people are willing to be honest and vulnerable on stage, one can't help but feel moved and inspired by their honesty. I loved this show!! I highly recommend it.

Word Play Dance

My favorite Fringe event so far! Windy's choreography was simple, thoughtful, and evocative. The performers then took it and breathed soul into every step. Who knew I'd get emotional watching three middle-aged men Gene Kelly their way across the stage? Or laugh out loud as a woman unbundled herself from layers of winter clothing? The most touching piece for me was John H.'s tribute to his father--so much love and longing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to each of you for being fearless and showing this anonymous Audience member how to be brave.

Look Ma, I'm Dancin'!

I'm not a huge fan of dance, but I like a lot of the authors involved in this performance--so I sucked it up and gave the show a chance. The premise is taking authors (many of whom have never danced) and using their written input and Windy Bowlsby's choreography in a synergy of styles. I was impressed. Since my biggest nightmare is having to speak or dance on stage, seeing some of these folks go with it and risk humiliation was impressive. One piece having to do with fathers was particularly well done to great emotional impact! Keeping in mind the amateur nature of the dancers, this show really worked for me.

There is something really candied and beautiful about people doing with all of their hearts and intentions something that doesn't come easily or instinctively to them. And it's a Really Fascinating process watching Artists (writers), that have their own keen sense of process and product have to work within an entirely new medium (movement). I think Windy is brilliant to highlight that vulnerability, and explore it. Its good dancing, but more importantly, its GREAT Art.

An interesting, but challenging concept which Windy Bowlsby and her troupe of intrepid writer/dancers make work in a most entertaining, charming and edifying manner. The show, which is immediately engaging on a dance performance level, also has a fair amount to say about how artists, and people in general, choose to present and express themselves. I was skeptical about seeing a dance performance by a group of non-professional dancers, but was completely won over by the combination of the writer's insights, well-designed choreography, and clever musical selections. Don't miss this one!

When finding out how writers, who are often so much in their heads that they find it difficult to let go and just enjoy dancing, embrace the creative challenge of telling a tale with their bodies, Windy Bowlsby and her cast crafted a show of pure happiness. Further, the brilliant and experienced writers who put their feet on the line by performing also contributed written observations which served as introductions to each dance. So, not only does the audience get a fun time watching creative folk outside their comfort zone embracing a challenge for the sheer joy of doing so but we also get some of their trademark wit and insight at the same time. This show blends choreography and writing to create something really special!

Best title of the Fringe?

Windy Bowlsby is a brilliant choreographer. My initial reaction was to wish that she had used real dancers who could really show off that talent. But as the show progressed it won me over. Part of great choreography is making use of what you've got. Which in this case was a bunch of Ms. Bowlsby's friends and colleagues better known for their brains than their dance moves. It was fun hearing the little essays they all wrote as part of the collaborative process and then seeing how she translated their insights to music and moves that made optimal use of their uneven dancing skills. And then there's that wonderful show title, which pushed me over the edge from 4 stars to 5.

There are many things we think about when we give 5* (or 5 kitties as we still call them).

1. A theme that resonates: Demonstrating to a crew of Fringe writers that words aren't the only way to tell a story. Dance is an equally legitimate vocabulary.
2. Engagement: Windy engaged us from Minute 1. She used the writers' words (and her own) to hook us.
3. Production Value: A tough one. Were they great dancers? Not so much ! But that was sort of the point. They were adorable.

We loved every moment, and encourage you to see it. [Note, the ONLY Fringe dance I have seen before was the burlesque show at the Ritz (?) theater many Fringes ago]

The only thing I disliked about the show is that it seemed to rely on the audience knowing the cast members. Someone who may not recognize many of the cast members might not enjoy the show quite as much. I really enjoyed the show, though!

Writers can dance

This was a dance show which told a story, told many small stories really. I enjoyed and could follow the story.

Watching philip andrew bennet low dance is more enjoyable then hearing his monologues.

Windy's interviews with her writers/dancers was eye-opennig, and gave some meaning to the song choices.

Refreshing and Brave

A great concept paired withthoughtful, delightful execution. I enjoyed seeing some of my favorite local writers challenge themselves in a different medium, and I applaud them. Windy Bowlsby shined as an emcee and as a choreographer who can utilize the strengths of a varied cast to create an engaging show. Equal parts comical and reflective, this show gives the audience a glimpse into the process and results of taking risks as an artist and the rewards therein. A show in the true spirit of the Fringe.

My first every fringe show has set a pretty high bar! This show will touch tug your heart strings through pure charm and joy. It is the very fact that most of these actors are writers rather than professional dancers that makes their dancing so wonderful - it's not pure in form but it more than makes up for that in spirit and fun!!

Charming & inspiring

I'm a writer who doesn't dance and I used to be an actor who danced badly. So the concept of writers who are (mostly) non-dancers dancing intrigued me. Bowlsby's dances were simple, stylish, and made effective use of qualities that the dancers did possess. Each dance told a clear story with movement and well-cosen pop songs. In addition, Bowlsby was a smart, funny presence as an emcee. This show is charming, funny, and an inspiration to people who think they can't dance. Plus, it uses a disco ball!

Not a dance guy

I heard Tim Wick talk about it on a podcast, and knew who a few cast members were. I enjoyed the show and thought it was a great time and I would have loved if it were longer. I've heard that's how you can tell if a show is any good, I think it was great.

Windy Bowlsby is a choreographer, director, and producer responsible for 2012 MN Fringe Festival Audience Choice-winner "Boogie-ography." As a singer and actress, she has also been seen on past Fringe stages in Blue Umbrella's "Flops!" as well as playing Captain James T. Kirk in "The Complete Works of William Shatner: Abridged." Windy is also proud to have choreographed for this year's Fringe shows "Top Gun: The Musical" and "Dreamboys." When she isn't dancing around her basement, Windy is frequently onstage with Big Fun Radio Funtime, on the derby track with the North Star Roller Girls, and on the airwaves with the Xanadu Cinema Pleasure Dome podcast. This show is entirely Tim Wick's fault.

Katherine Glover


Katherine Glover has been creating and touring solo shows across the U.S. and Canada since 2008, including Dead Wrong; Burning Brothels: Sex and Death in Nevada; and A Cynic Tells Love Stories. She's also an Ivey Award-winning playwright, and her latest play, The Man in Her Dreams, will debut in October as part of Freshwater Theatre Company's 2014-2015 season. Kelvin Hatle


Kelvin is a veteran of numerous Fringe Festival shows, although to the best of his faulty memory, none of them involved dance. Last year, he was seen in English Scrimshaw Theatrical Novelties' production of To Mars With Tesla! and his one-man show The Press Conference At The End Of The World. He is a regular writer and performer with Fearless Comedy Productions, most often in Big Fun Radio Fun Time and Vilification Tennis. He can also be seen at the Illusion Theatre in Comedy Suitcase's production of The Kafka Nuts. He will eat just about anything you put in front of him, and wouldn't turn down a beer if you bought him one.

John Heimbuch


John Heimbuch is a playwright, director, and media artist. He is the Co-Artistic Director of Walking Shadow Theatre Company and a vocalist for the steampunk rock band Bad September. His writings have been produced locally by Walking Shadow, Theatre Forever, Hardcover Theater, The Minnesota Historical Society, The Guthrie Theater, Steeltoe Stiletto Films, and the Minnesota Fringe Festival. John is currently developing a short film based on his play The Transdimensional Couriers Union; and a very long time ago he got a Minor in Modern Dance.

phillip low


phillip andrew bennett low is a Chinese-American playwright and poet, storyteller and mime, theatre critic and libertarian activist. His solo performances have won acclaim from Minneapolis to Chicago, DC to LA -- even as far as Melbourne, Australia. He is the co-founder of the Rockstar Storytellers and was founder and producer of the touring theatre troupe Maximum Verbosity.

In this Festival, he is also performing Indefinite Articles: A Libertarian Rage, and has written a sketch for Fringe Orphans by Navel Gaze Productions.

Ben San Del


Ben San Del is a Minneapolis comedian and playwright who has written and produced six shows for the MN Fringe Festival, including Audience Choice-winners "Animal Cracker Genocide," "A Nice Guy's Guide to Awkward Sex," and "Minnesota Middle Finger." His seventh Fringe production, "Fiddlestick Conundrum," debuts this year. He has never before danced on stage nor has he had any training in dance, but he did once see Dirty Dancing, and nobody puts him in a corner.

Cole Sarar


Cole Sarar was a winner of a 2010 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant in Poetry, a 2012 VERVE Grant through Intermedia Arts, and a 2013 Emerging Writers Grant through the Loft Literary Center. In 2013 and again in 2014, she created Ring Ring Poetry, an interactive poetry installation which uses phone technology to connect audiences with Minnesotan poets and landscapes. She performed in the 2013 Minnesota Fringe Festival in the storytelling show, "The Gravity of Ghosts."

Tim Uren


Tim Uren is an actor, comedian, writer, game developer, and generally weathered veteran of the Twin Cities theater. He has worked with the Brave New Workshop, Starting Gate Theater, The Scrimshaw Brothers, Theatre in the Round, Hardcover Theater, as well as producing his own work, such as 10,000 Comic Books, Michigan Disasters, H.P. Lovecraft’s "The Rats in the Walls," and The Curse of Yig. Tim Uren’s production company presented its inaugural show, Trust and Obey, as part of the Twin Cities Horror Festival. Natalie Wass


Natalie Rae Wass has been attending Minnesota fringe since 1998 and performed in almost every year since 2000. For 2013, she decided to write and produce, too, creating the fifth best-selling show of the Festival, "Fashion Risk." Previous fringe performances include roles in 'Knit One/Purl the Other' by Sharon DeMark, 'A Nice Guy's Guide to Awkward Sex' by Ben San Del and numerous roles with the Ministry of Cultural Warfare, Chopping Block Productions and Green T Productions. She can also be seen in the Fringe shows ‘Green T’s 2001: A Space Odyssey’ and ‘The Tiger in the Room’. Outside of fringe, Natalie has appeared regularly with Green T and at the Old Log Theater and can be hired as a singing telegram through Party Crashers, a living statue through Mannequin in Motion or seen as an emcee/dancer/costumed character at Mall of America among other venues.

Tim Wick


Tim has been the director of Vilification Tennis for over 20 years. For those of you who have seen the show, you will know it in no way prepares him to run a company like ‘Fearless Comedy Productions’, of which is his the artistic director. His years with Comedy musicians “The Dregs” are further proof of his incompetence.

Tim has produced several successful shows at the Minnesota Fringe festival including “The Complete Works of William Shatner (abridged)” and “Story Time Time Bomb.” He has written comedy sketches for CONvergence and is one third of the “Geeks Without God” podcasting juggernaut. He also blogs ceaselessly at petsnakereggie.com.

For this Fringe, he will also be writing Top Gun: The Musical.

At last year's Fringe Festival after-party, choreographer and Audience Choice winning producer Windy Bowlsby and comedian/musician Tim Wick noticed that many Fringe writers were not hitting the dance floor, but were instead standing on the sidelines, looking sad. Tim dared Windy to put together an entire dance show featuring these over-thinking, neurotic non-dancers. Windy accepted the challenge, and the result is Jumpin' Jack Kerouac.

So, this August, Katherine Glover, Kelvin Hatle, John Heimbuch, phillip andrew bennett low, Ben San Del, Cole Sarar, Tim Uren, Natalie Rae Wass, and Tim Wick will get out of their heads and on to the dance floor.
